We stopped by this place on our way home from Wisconsin dells it is not to far from there. The place is spectacular. It was a little pricey for off season $17 per person and you don't get to see the whole village but it was more than I knew it could be. Its like a whole little city built in the middle of the woods on a bluff. I would definately recommend visiting here in the summer rather than winter.
House on the Rock is really Interesting to go through as an adult, but I don't think I would take my young children there. There is something inherently creepy about the locale...not sure if it's the disjointed architecture. Also, not a very stroller friendly location. I would probably skip this attraction unless you have slightly older children that will "get" the architechture, rooms, etc.
We were on our way to Mall of America and AAAs roadside attractions pointed us here so we spent the day at House on the Rock. Now since I love antiques I thought the house was totally cool. Not for little kids of course because you can't touch most of the items because it is museum, but ideal for 10 and up. It shows kids it's cool to collect things and take care of them. The gift shops were trashy and could have had more unique items (kind of reminded me of Times Square crap). The carousel was one of a kind because it has NO HORSES-frogs, birds... but no horses. Kind of dark and musty and sometimes hard to navigate it was an still an adventure I will never forget.
This place was very interesting. The coolest thing is the infinity room (it looks like it goes on forever) and the bathrooms by the cafe are pretty interesting (both the mens and womens). Other than that it is REALLY long self guided tour. I went at Christmas time and there were lots of random creepy Christmas decorations all around...like things you would see at a thrift shop or in your Grandma's garage all in one place. It's really weird. Inside there is a giant carousel that you aren't allowed to ride. There are some spots that are outside and it was rather cold (it was winter after all) so make sure to take a coat! I'd say skip this one, but if you do decide to go, make sure you allow for several hours and wear comfortable shoes (it's a long one for sure).
I have to say the House on the Rock is filled with interesting rooms and items, but it was all too much for me and my family. It was a much longer trek through the house than I had thought and I started to feel sick in some of the rooms because they were so musty and stuffy. I would not go through it again and would definitely recommend bringing a stroller with you.
This place really is one of a kind. Even as an adult I was in awe. My kids thought it was so neat, so many different things to check out all in one place. You certainly wont get bored here. Wonderful learning experience! Would be a great place to take a fieldtrip if you are a homeschool family or teacher!
Over Columbus Day weekend, the family headed out to Spring Green WI to see the great House on the Rock. Please be aware that there is plenty of walking to do (almost 3 hours) to see everything. So, bring a stroller for your little one. The visitor center has been revamped, with a family friendly washroom. The actual tour is in 3 parts, so you can take it at your leisure. Be aware though, the first part of the tour (the house itself) will require you to carry your infant/toddler. As for the other parts, luckily there are benches and water stops in case you need to catch your breath. For our little one, she was fine with the exhibits, there's no real scary moments (excepts for the timid parents!).
I loved doing this tour as an adult. There is so much to see, it would take you 1 whole day to get through it all. I have a hard time recommending it for anyone under 9 yo, as it is a lot of see and no touch. Fun place for older elementary students and up!
I had been to House on the Rock when I was a teenager, and it's still amazing to see years later. The entrance and visitor center are nicer now, but the idea is the same: collection upon collection.
I was a little nervous to take the kids since I remembered the Tiffany lamps in the actual house portion, but that part is a lot smaller and less worrisome than I remembered it being.
The kids thought the Infinity Room was great, even though I couldn't overcome my fear of heights to go out in it.
The attraction is now broken into three sections; one price buys tickets to all of them but you can visit on different days if you wish. If you want to do it all at once, you just move from one area to the next.
My kids' favorites were the carousel with its 20,000 lights and the circus area. There are collections of everything in this place.
There are change machines available in several places for the various musical rooms, and if you get too many tokens, you can redeem them in the gift shop on the way out (at least if you purchase something).
The House on the Rock is expensive but it's one of those things everyone should see at least once, if for no other reason than to see the sheer amount of things that one person collected.
This place is so wacked out! I don't remember it being too stroller friendly, so call ahead and check. But man, it's nuts. The guy who lived here definitely was smokin' some strong stuff. It's an architectural wonder of a place. There's even one room that's pretty famous that could make your knees buckle if you're afraid of heights. It's a room surrounded by glass that comes to a narrow point and suspended over the forest below. I don't think it cost much to get in, either. And I believe parking was free but don't quote me on that!
Not sure if every kid would like House on the Rock. The child inside of me LOVES the place but that child is a bit odd at times. Our son is a bit odd at times too so I hope he'll love HOTR as much as his daddy does. Imagine the physical manifestation of all your weird labyrinth dreams (I've had a handful in my lifetime that I can remember). This is one man's obsessive collection and project. One of the great pieces of Americana.
