Unfortunately, we arrived too late to take the tour, but the kids loved walking across the dam anyway. In particular, they found the architecture and decor of the restrooms to be quite fascinating (art deco). It was a little hot, but the parking -- where we parked -- was free. Definitely worth the detour from Las Vegas.
I am afraid of heights but I walked over the dam. There are tours that you can take that will tell you about the history of the dam. I think the tours might be kind of pricy though. There is a souvenir shop as well. My kids enjoyed picking out their own souvenirs to take home. It is really cool to visit and we will go back when our kids are older. If you can go when they open the flood gates that is even better.
We visited this on our way from Nevada to Arizona. The dam is on the border of the two states and you have to drive over it to cross. It is an awsome sight. The tour is very interesting. Many men died during the construction of this dam, and it has completely changed the landscape and economy of the area. We have been out west a number of times and always stop to view the dam as we cross over.
Our family of four visited Hoover Dam many years ago, from New Jersey. It was an amazing place to see, inside and out. The site alone was everything pictures had shown and more. The tour inside was just as interesting. Between what we saw and what we heard during the tour, it was unbelievable. Our children were ages 10 and 12 at the time.
One place to make sure you dont miss while in the Vegas area or the surrounding areas is the Hoover Dam. This scenic entity is jaw dropping to say the least. Bring your hiking shoes and take a walk around this magnificent structure. If your not the walking type...no worries there's plenty to see from wherever you are. A must see.....
I have always seen pictures of the Hoover Dam, but seeing this grandeur in person is so much better! Taking a look down into the Colorado River was breathtaking. It was amazing to see the massive creation built by human hands. At the time of our visit, they were completing the highway across, which was another incredible sight to see and proves the unbelievable skills of engineers! This is a must-see at least once!!
This place is HUGE. You have to see it once- it will blow you away. You really have to see it in person to fully grasp how impressive it is. They offer several different types of tours, and that really makes the experience worthwhile. I wouldn't drive 5 hours just to see it, but if you happen to be in Las Vegas, it's worth stopping by.
I have visited this site several times when driving through on my way to Arizona. It is absolutely a marvel to see one of the biggest dams in the world! I would recommend renting a video on it's making and watching it before you go. I have never done the tour you pay for but wish I had done it.
There are 3 different types of tours that you can take at Hoover Dam: Hoover Dam (includes all 3), Powerplant (includes Visitor Center), and Visitor Center only. We've been on the Powerplant Tour when my son was 11 months old and my hubby held him a baby bjorn during that. Recently, we went to the Visitor Center only with our two kids, the older one was almost 3 and our baby was 11 months at the time. They are still too young to appreciate the engineering greatness of this dam and the history behind it.
The Powerplant Tour was very informative and educational. It was impressive to see the huge generators there. The exhibits and displays in the Visitor Center explain the history of the dam and why it was built. Good photo opps of the Dam, Lake Meade, and the Bypass Bridge currently under construction are at the Observation Deck of the Visitor Center.
You have to pay for parking and if I remember correctly, it's $5.
We visited the Dam years ago, before Sept 11. I heard that after that part of the Dam could not be visited anymore. Things may have changed since. We found the visit to be very interesting, we went all over and inside the Dam and we did not want the visit to stop. Our guide was very informative.
Parking fills up quickly so it is better to go early.
I have to agree with the previous review. This is a great tour for people that are interested in history and the development of this great monument to man's ingenuity. The history of the building of this dam is really interesting but don't just listen to the tour, stop in Boulder City and visit with some of the locals. And no, there are no bodies buried in the dam! (Official Stand)
The Hoover Dam is located on the Nevada/Arizona border about 7 miles from Boulder City. It's open everyday except Christmas and Thanksgiving at various times. The tours are great for greater knowledge on the dam, but probably aren't the greatest for littler kids. However, they will love walking across the border and seeing the distance between where they are and the bottom of the dam. We took a sack lunch and had a picnic. It was fun. :)
