"Turtle Walks- Memorable Experience"

In June and July, Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge conducts turtle walks. $5/person.  We did this last summer and want to do it again this year.  You need to call in early April to reserve a spot. It books quickly.  You meet around 8:30pm, watch an educational video about turtles, and receive instructions for the evening.  Everyone then congregates at the Hobe Sound beach pavillion and waits until scouts find a turtle coming on shore.  Once spotted, 15-20 people go onto the beach and watch up close as a 200 pound turtle or bigger lays her eggs, covers them, and then makes her way out to the ocean.  Last summer, we cheered her on as she entered the ocean. It is hard to express how truly exciting it is when you are on the beach at night and witness one of nature's miracles.  My kids 10 and 8 were able to get close enough to see her tears (to keep sand out of her eyes) and will never forget her sheer strength of moving the sand when covering her eggs. My youngest child, 3, fell asleep by 9. This is better suited for kids that can stay up later.

"Fun with the Family"

It hosts environmental education programs, summer kids’ camps, nature hikes, exhibits, and sea-turtle walks. Its beach is a prime nesting site for sea turtles. The tiny but packed full interpretative center on the mainland contains a big, old, soft vinyl manatee toy and glass boxes filled with a baby alligator, a baby crocodile, and snakes. Easy nature trails take you around the placid waterfront.
