"A must see in Savannah."

History buff or not, one must visit Historic River Street when coming to Savannah.  This is a road close to the seashore with colonial style homes and businesses.  This is really a nice place to walk with family with 'mini' parks to rest (think of  Forest Gump where he was waiting for the city bus and mentioned 'life is a box of chocolates..").  The tall old overgrown trees draped in spanish moss even sing of the days past.  Of course, there are guided tours here.  And if you cannot do the tour, there are many plaques, statues, memorials, signs etc that one can read while strolling through the downtown so you can teach yourself some history.  I think families with older kids will enjoy this since most children have some awareness of colonial US history.  I highly doubt children younger than 6 will have the patience nor appreciation of River street.

"Don't wear heels!"

We went to Savannah on our honeymoon and we loved the historic river district. It is absolutely gorgeous. The water is beautiful and there are a ton of shops and restaurants around. The streets are cobblestone so I highly recommend not wearing heels. I had to stop and buy flip flops at one of the shops my feet were hurting so badly. Be sure and visit if you are ever in Savannah!

"Yummy Candy"

For kids, River Street doesn't offer much more than an awesome candy shop.  Keep in mind that there are homeless people, drunks, and more, so it's not the best place to take the kids unless you go during the day.  Still the smell of beer is overwhelming.  We enjoy stopping by just to go to the River Street Sweet shop.  It's very tasty.  Other than that, nothing here for kids.

"Great Time"

A must see.  You need a good pair of  shoes when you walk down the cobblestone street on the river walk.  The old buildings are so awesome to see.  The riverboat is fun and the lady waving statue is there.  She is an interesting story.  Lots of shops to stop by and the seafood is great!

"So Much to See and Do!"

We try to stop in Savannah at least once every year, even if it's just for a day.  And every time we visit River Street.  It is THE place to shop, eat, and stroll, right on the water.

Our favorite place to stop for lunch or brunch is Huey's, where you can enjoy great food, fun atmosphere, and a beautiful view of the river.

There is also a free ferryboat over to the convention center on the island in the middle of the river.  Can be a fun little ride back and forth for families with kids! :-)

"Historic River Street"

River Street is a great place for casual walking. Be forewarned....River Street at night is NOT kid friendly. We went in February, so walking by the river was a bit chilly. There's great pop-in stores, some touristy, some unique to Savannah. The food along River Street is great.... I always recommend the seafood, of course!

"Great for a day of leisure."

I have been on River Street several times and continue to want to return. There are lots of neat shops for everyone in your family and so many amazing restaurants.  It's a great place to see a lot of the local culture and architecture.  Be sure to get some praline samples from the candy store but be warned you will want to purchase more!

"Great play area on the waterfront"

The street is just lovely to wander down, just look out for the trams!  We took a boat trip from here, you get some great views of the waterfront.  There is a lovely sand pit and boat on the water front - the kids loved playing here making it a lovely place to stop for an ice cream.

"Great!"

River Street is awesome.  Cobblestone streets.  Great Architecture.  Don't forget to check out the Savannah Cotton Exchange building, it is now a restraunt; the building was built in 1887.  And the Savannah Candy Kitchen, one of the great places to see.  The waving Girl Statue that greets ship into harbor is on there also.  Lots of eclectis little shops for souvenirs and shopping.  Lots of places to dine or to get a drink.
