Hidden between Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak lies the town of Manitou Springs. "Manitou," a Native American word for "spirit," describes this mountain community. The town has a historic feel and natural beauty with eleven named mineral springs throughout town that are fed by the snows of Pikes Peak.
A great place to stay and be able to branch off to do a multitude of activities. There is something for everyone, hiking, rafting, fishing, golfing and even some shopping!!
We really enjoy visiting Manitou Springs. There is a cute little park right along the main road that our kids love to play at. We have made it a tradition to eat brunch or lunch in Manitou springs on Christmas eve. This past year we went to a tasty little creperie along the main street - I would definitely recommend the Monte Cristo Crepe! We love to browse the cute little shops, play at the park, and maybe grab a funnel cake. It's a great little tourist place to visit for souveniers and things too!
I think it probably depends on what your goal is. There certainly are fun things to do there with kids, and it's definitely worth the little drive out there to see it as it's a unique little shopping area. I would say, with kids, our favorite part of Manitou is the arcade. It's really inexpensive (go stocked with nickels, dimes, and quarters... maybe even a few pennies), and there are lots of rides for the kids and games to play... oh, and you can buy funnel cake there! That's always fun! As far as the fun shopping stuff though... at least with my kids, that part is a no-go. So Manitou almost warrants two trips... one with kids and one without. :)
Manitou Springs is a great town at the base of Pikes Peak. There are a lot of places to go, and is especially fun to visit in the summer. The town is rather eccentric, and has a laid-back, hippy vibe. Kids will enjoy the penny arcade and old fashion candy shops. There are also some interesting historical places to see.
Manitou Springs is an interesting place for kids and adults. Alot of shopping and interesting things to see but the best for kids is the penny arcade. They have alot of old fashioned video games that still only cost a penny or a nickle. And you have to get some salt water taffy from the tiny little shop by the arcade. YUMM
We went to go shopping in downtown Manitou Springs, and had a wonderful time. There are lots of cute little touristy shops. We were able to find lots of knick-knacks to send home to our family. We stopped in the arcade and let my son play around on the games for awhile, and then had lunch at one of the eateries (forgot the name, but they have excellent ice cream!).
We love walking along the store lined streets at the base of the Colorado Rockies. The stores are unique and the people are friendly. They have an amazing taffy shop that I kept going back to when I was pregnant to satisfy my cravings. We loved the puppets in the toy store too. :) Also, there is an amazing mexican food restaurant further up the hill in Manitou Springs called Amanda's Fonda that is incredible, has great prices and has been written up for the good food several times. :)
Along the "Main Street" in Manitou Springs are little eclectic shops. You can find Colorado and Pike's Peak T-shirts & hats, Indian jewelry, and pretty much anything else a tourist could want to take home with them. Interspersed among the shops are great little eateries, art galleries, and a huge arcade. A great place to window shop and browse.
We love taking a drive to Manitou Springs on the weekend, walking around the downtown area and taking in all the sights. The buildings are interesting because of the historical architecture and the artistic touches. This area is a thriving artist community, and while it can be a little crazy to navigate the twisty and narrow streets, that is just part of the fun! There are walking tours offered during the summer and all sorts of crazy events during the year, fruitcake tossing and coffin races, and all sorts of crazy and unique events. You can also visit several of the original springs and taste the mineral waters there!
