They have free, fun, educational tours of the snack food factory. You will learn fun facts about making potato chips, pretzels, cheese curls, popcorn, tortilla chips, corn chips and other salted snacks. You will also learn how they reuse the wasted snacks, steam, water, cardboard, etc. – since Herr’s was “green” before anyone was talking about being “green”.
The tours are guided and lasts one hour. Visitors are able to eat warm potato chips right out of the cooker. Fresh, warm potato chips taste like crunchy French fries!!
We did the tour and the children thought it was neat to see all the machines. I was a bit disappointed that you couldn't take pictures but I understand why. The tour is quick so children don't get bored. It ends up in the factory store where you get to buy all the Herr products you are craving.
Take a tour through the Herr’s Snack Foods Factory in Nottingham, PA. Starting with a short movie in the in-house theater, this tour takes you through the creation of the Herr’s Snack Food Company. It is an interesting story and the movie takes about fifteen minutes. Next, your group is taken on a guided tour through the actual factory where you watch various snack foods being prepared right in front of you, through large picture windows. Along the tour, sample fresh chips right from the line, hot and salty. End your tour in the in-house store where you can choose from your favorites as well as local specialties you may not get a chance to sample otherwise. Some words of warning: wear sneakers or other closed-toe shoes as the tour leads you through some messy areas at times. If visiting in the winter, bring your coat as you will be traveling in and out of various buildings and it can get pretty cold (something I learned the hard way). Keep a close eye on children, as you will be walking through the actual factory at times and little fingers can get into trouble when not properly supervised. Otherwise, have fun seeing how your favorite snack foods go from the field to your table.
i recently took the family and it was a huge blast they are stroller friendly and have amazing tour guides after the tour you can grab lunch at chippers cafa or pack a lunch and a frisbee and about half a mile there is a park thats great for small kids!
My children love to go to Herr's for their factory tour. They have a great presentation at the begining of the tour offering the history of Herr's and its founders. They then take you through the factory to show the kids how potato chips are made. My kids love the warm chips they give you right from the factory floor.
You can see how Herr’s snacks are made and then try some chips still warm from the fryer at Herr Foods, Inc. Cutting-edge tour technology uses DVD screens for close-up viewing in production areas. Chipper’s Cafe offers hot dogs, chicken nuggets, PB&J, pizza, and cookies. Wheelchair accessible, with a changing table in the women’s room.
