Hell’s Half Acre is a geological anomaly located about 40 miles west of Casper, WY, on Hwy 20/26. We made a quick stop when we were driving from Casper, WY to Jackson Hole, WY. It consists of over 300 acres of rock formations and caves which resemble that of the Grand Canyon or the Dakota Badlands. The spot once sported a restaurant and hotel, but both are now closed and fenced off. A wooden sign stands next to the fenced in cliffs and chronicles the site as a hunting spot for Native Americans who drove herds of wild buffaloes over the cliffs to their deaths. Older children will get a kick out of the fact that Hell’s Half Acre was the setting for the planet Klendathu in the movie Starship Troopers. Standing at the edge of the cliff you can picture Johnnie Rico blasting some bugs! Kids will love the site because of its interesting appearance and the sheer size of the gorge. Be careful when viewing the gorge and hold your little one’s hands. It is a long way down. Parents will love the site because it is free! Although the site is interesting and free, there isn’t much else to do there so just plan a quick stop to stretch your legs on your way to other parts of Wyoming.
