Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a spectacular Garden in a Valley on the Ocean - acclaimed as one of the most beautiful areas in all Hawaii. The Garden is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, 8 1/2 miles north of Hilo on the four-mile Scenic Route at Onomea Bay (click here for map, admissions and hours). In this garden valley, nature trails meander through a true tropical rainforest, crossing bubbling streams, passing several beautiful waterfalls and the exciting ocean vistas along the rugged Pacific coast.

This botanic gardens is BEAUTIFUL. I thought it was a bit steep in price but that might be because we're a family of 6 so everything seems steep in price. :) But I do think it was worth it. Amazing tropical gardens and beautiful ocean views. I've never seen anything like it. We stopped just before our visit at What's Shakin smoothie stand a bit north on the road and had amazing smoothies (papaya!) - really a great afternoon in general.
If this isn't the prettiest place on the planet, it's in the top twenty. Cool and shady paths, level (and some if not all paved, as I recall) past more tropical plants and flowers than you can imagine. There are huge trees, vines, sisal plants, waterfalls, flamingoes -- it should entertain everyone except maybe teenagers. Definitely some friendly mosquitoes in the area.
Even if your kids aren’t excited at the proposal of venturing to yet another beautiful garden, you should insist on including Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens on your itinerary. Here, you’ll get to explore a true tropical rain forest up close. Facilities include restrooms and drinking fountains. (Bring mosquito repellent!) The walking tours are self-guided and take about an hour. The various trails are well maintained and easily navigable. The Ocean Trail leads to the sea, where violently foaming waves crash into the jagged coastline. Even the sounds are impressive as the water sloshes in and out of submerged lava tubes.
