The beach is good for kids to play with sand. They can create many amazing stuffs. However, I do not like the weather there. It's too windy and cold. I do not think it's good for kids with the weather like that. But when the weather is warmer, this is a great place for kids and families.
I personally think that Stinson beach is somehow better, but it's just my point of view.
We have not been there in a little while but when we did go it was never terribly busy. The kids will have great fun if they like the water and sand. Build sand castles, get a tan, people watch, watch the surfers, or just take a walk. It is a great little beach with hidden coves and all sorts of things to discover. Highly recommend checking it out at least one time.
Buy a kite at Lunar Wind Inventions in town, and head for these 3 miles of adjacent sandy beaches. At Francis Beach, the most popular, are developed RV and tent campsites, cold showers, BBQs, picnic sites, and the ranger station. If the campground is full, try the nice Pelican Point RV Park on Miramontes Point Road (650–726–9100). Notice the skateboard park on the highway at Kelly Avenue.Water temperature is chilly, even in summer, and the surf can be treacherous, so plan to dip your toes and play on the sand. The major weather pattern for Half Moon Bay is fog in the summer, crisp, clear days in the fall and spring, and wet, windy winters. The Half Moon Bay State Beach Visitor Center is open Saturdays and Sundays. Entrance to the Visitor Center is free. The Visitor Center is completely accessible to those with disabilities. Come on in and learn about the exciting world of the beach and experience the cultural history of the Coastside. Francis Beach has a campground with 52 individual sites, some suitable for tent camping, others for trailers or recreational vehicles. Although hookups are not available, there is a dump station. Coin-operated hot showers are also available. (approximately 2 minutes per quarter) Venice Beach has outside showers, flush toilets, and a payphone. Coastside Trail runs along the eastern boundary of the four beaches providing close to a three mile stretch to walk, jog or ride bikes. The trail continues north to Pillar Point Harbor. A horse trail parallels Coastside Trail from Roosevelt Beach to Francis Beach. While in the state parks, horses are restricted to the designated horse trail and are not permitted on State Beaches. Please, NO beach fires are allowed. Dogs are prohibited on the beaches at all times. Dogs are permitted in the campground, in the day-use picnic areas, and on the Coastal Trail, provided they are controlled with a leash of no more than six feet at all times. Where Can I Take My Dog.pdf The Ocean - Always use caution when you are in or near the ocean. The ocean water is very cold year round. Even a short swim can cause cramps or hypothermia (a life threatening condition which occurs when your body temperature drops below normal). In addition, strong rip currents can pull even the most experienced swimmers off shore. Please refrain from removing shells, driftwood, and other natural beach features. Fireworks are prohibited.
great beach if you catch it on a good weather day. seems like half moon bay has more gloomy days than sunny ones, so make sure to check the weather report. water will be too cold for the kids (and most adults), but the little ones will probably enjoy just looking at the waves and making sand castles..
Ahhhh, we love this place. So relaxing... A couple of warnings though: check the weather in Half Moon Bay before going, because it can be much colder and windier than in San Francisco or the Peninsula, and it can also be very foggy at certain times of the year. Bring layers!!!
