Hands on activity space designed for crawlers through preschool.
We had a membership for a while and took our son there often between the ages of 18 months - 2 years. He always had fun running from area to area, but the place gets REALLY crowded on cold and rainy days, so it was hard for him to find a place to play. They have a nice art area with a big wall that the kids can paint on. They also have an art table set up with an art activity, so if your kid enjoys art, it is fun for that.
We took my son and his friends to the Habitot children's museum in Berkley CA. It was super easy to find and we looked forward to having a great day of adventure. Sadly we were very much let down. I have seen apartments larger than this place. It might be OK for a large group, for you surely will not lose your children. I would not recommend it if you are making a day trip out of it however.
This small children's museum seems like a secret gem. It's a great place to stop after you've been dragging your kids around Berkeley. Our 3 year old loved the train table (then again, he LOVES all things trains) and the fire engine that he could climb.
Unlike other children's museums that we've been to, this one is much, much smaller, but it's still a fun place to go, as long as you only have an hour or two.
A little caveat: We have a membership to another museum that allowed us to get free reciprocal admission here. I'm not sure if I would have rated this place as highly if we had to pay.
Fabulous place to take the kiddies on a rainy or cold day. Reasonably priced fee to get in. Very hands on everything they have their. face paints and mirrors so the kids can do face painting, water play, painting, sand etc. There are at least 8 activity rooms, so kids are running criss-cross everywhere. There are hand sanitizers at multiple locations. Oh and the yearly membership is a steal so if you think you're going to visit at least once a month, it's worth the price.
My two daughters are big girls now but when they were toddlers, they spent hours playing at Habitot, going from one activity to the other and having tons of fun. They had regularly free events that were very entertaining. I avoided going there on rainy days as it was packed.
Though there's some variance through the year, I've usually seen the following area:
+ Pre-walker "garden" where everything is padded
+ Wind Tunnel with a button to turn the large fan on and off
+ Water play with water tables and plastic crabs, snorkelers and buckets
+ Art space with a staff showing different arts like clay or finger painting (aprons provided).
The parenting book library and toy lending library are for members, which has made it's money back for us in the number of visits we've made.
Habitot is like a cool basement for toddlers. It's somewhat dark but full of cool things - water tables, tumbling area, dress-up, etc. Compared though to Studio Grow and Bay Area Discovery Museum it feels like, well, a basement. Still a good place to bring a toddler on a rainy or cold day since you can sit in one place for quite a while as your child runs around but not one I would get a membership at. One cool thing they have there is a free toy lending library for members. Now THAT'S a good idea.
