Adjacent to Green Briar is the 57-acre Briar Patch Conservation Area, home of Peter Rabbit and many of the other Thornton Burgess animal characters. Walking trails are open to the public.
Two miles from the Burgess Museum is the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen, founded in 1903. The nature center building is adjacent to the Briar Patch Conservation Area and a small wildflower garden, and houses natural history exhibits and a collection of small live animals. The fifty-seven acres of forests are laced with easy walking trails.
The Thornton W. Burgess Society runs a full program of nature walks and natural history classes, mostly geared to children and families, throughout the year. After you explore the nature center, stop in at the Jam Kitchen, an old-fashioned kitchen in a pondside building that looks like it’s right out of one of Burgess’s stories. The Jam Kitchen sells natural jams, jellies, and pickled goods.
Ask about classes on the fine art of making jam. The Cape Cod Cranberry Day in September is quite popular.
