After exhausting all of our normal options while waiting for our hotel room to open up, we decided to get outside our comfort zone a little and head over to Great Skate.
Great Skate is located in Glendale, AZ in what doesnt look like the best part of town. However upon entering the rink both my wife and I were surprised to find that the rink was a stark contrast to the drab exterior. It was lively and upbeat with multiple parties, lots of kids and ample seating for those with skates and without.
The DJ was pretty solid, getting skaters involved, announcing birthdays, taking requests and he knew his demographic, playing all genres of music. The staff otherwise was great if not completely overwhelmed. I stood in line for 20 minutes for a soda but couldnt blame the employee at the snack stand because he was the only one there. Everyone there was friendly and helpful amid the chaos of a Saturday afternoon rush.
The one thing that caught my attention was the fact that they offer different sized stabilizers for kids that are unsteady on the skates. Essentially it's a walker made out of PVC pipes with wheels on the bottom. An ingenious idea that was apparently added to most every roller rink since I had last been inside one 25 years ago. It was great to see that my 4 year old could have as much fun as my 9 year old on the rink with help from the stabilizer.
Glad we decided to look for something different to do because we never would have ever thought to do something like this if not on vacation.
(Side Note: My 9 year old enjoyed it so much that shes asked that we make the half hour trip to a rink to go roller skating for her birthday)
