I have been here several times. It is amazing looking inside with all types of wall murals and decor. They have all the train and subway terminals there and It is just awesome to see how big it is. Definitely a place to visit if you are new to seeing New York City. I highly recommend this.
Grand Central Station is a fun place to see. Your younger kids may not appreciate the architectural beauty there but you will. The Main Concourse will be full of busy people and they are fun to watch. I think traveling by train in the city is safe and fun so if you are going to do so with you family be sure to stop here. There are places for shopping and restaurants as well.
This was not high on our list of things to see, but since we stayed in Connecticut during our visit, we got to visit Grand Central every day. I am SO glad we did not miss out on this. This is just one of the places in NYC that is so iconic and should be seen by anyone visiting NYC. They always have something on display to see. I could think of a dozen movies I have seen filmed right there. We loved to go down to the little food shops to pick something up to eat on the train on the way back to Connecticut. There is something for everyone.
Grand Central Terminal really is a very nice stop. It's definitely visible that they recently renovated because the terminal is very nice and clean. It's location is amazing and it's surprisingly kid-friendly (or at least as kid friendly as it could be).
We took our almost 3 and 1 year old kiddos to Grand Central to kill some time before we could check into our home away from home recently. It may not be a destination in itself, but good to spend half an hour or so. Since our family is from LA and stuck in the car most of the time, going to a train station was fascinating, especially to our older child. The Grand Central website lists a walking tour to give some ideas of points of interest within Grand Central. The highlight for our family was the Whispering Gallery where one person talks into one corner and another person can hear diagonally across. Pretty cool!
After a $200 million renovation, this Beaux Arts titan of travel terminals gleams again, from the fiber optic stars in the ceiling’s constellations to the gold-plated meloshaped chandeliers. Dine fancy or food-court style, browse dozens of shops, then wander downstairs to the Whispering Gallery, where you can stand in a corner and talk softly yet be heard clearly on the other side of the room.
We liked it, the constellation ceiling was beautiful and the Station is HUGE. It looks like a little city in the big city. I would not spend more than half and hour inside but I would not skip it either. We especially liked the ticket booths, had a nice retro feeling.
A common and famous meeting place over the years. It can get crowded and there are some markets and shops for tourists to visit. It's not really a place for young children to enjoy. Older kids (junior high and up) may appreciate it more. The many trains that support the Greater NY area end here, and so it's called a "Terminal" not merely a station.
Fun Fact: The ceiling of the Grand Central is painted with the constellations of stars. The arrangement of stars are not what you would see in the night sky from Earth but in reverse. It is from the perspective of outer space in towards Earth. I think it gently mocks self-important New Yorkers who think of themselves as gods.
grand central is a great place to visit. lots of little shops and eateries - there are SO many to choose from. at christmas it's the best place to stay out of the cold. they have their laser light show plus a holiday fair with little stands for shopping. there are also lots of different exhibits in the summer so make sure to check out their website when you come to visit. good for kids - my daughter especially loved the past from one of the italian food stands!
This place is indeed grand. Older kids might enjoy learning about the constellations painted on the ceiling. You can also quiz them on which of the two grand staircases are original. There is a little bit of shopping if you need to kill some time and on the lower dining level, there are plenty of quick and easy food options as well. The best part is that this is a classic NY landmark without any NY admission prices.
