Canoeing or kayaking the Russian River is a must-do for many visitors—May through October are the best months. Most rental companies will supply all equipment and shuttle you back to the starting point. Bring plenty of water and a change of clothes for the return ride, secure your car keys with a safety pin in your pocket, wear hats and rubber-soled shoes (to protect against sharp rocks), and beware of sunburn on the tops of your legs. If you bring an ice chest, also bring bungee cords to secure it to the canoe. No pets or glass containers.
