Gas Works Park has a play area with a large play barn, and big hill popular for flying kites. Special park features include a sundial, and a beautiful view of Seattle.
This is a giant park with amazing views of lake union. it is a great place to be for 4th of july (very crowded) and the all time best place for hide and seek in the world! There are all these old machines that used to do something having to do with gas that you can climb around and play on.
I love the view of Seattle from this park. Standing on the hill, you're at the north end of Lake Union looking towards downtown Seattle with the Space Needle dominating the city skyline. It's a great spot for kite-flying on a windy day or for watching sailboats, kayakers and sea-planes in the middle of summer. Small children love to run up and down the hills while older children will be fascinated with the (now painted) large machinery left from the park's former days as a coal gas manufacturing plant. There are not many restaurants or cafes in this area but the Wallingford neighborhood is just a short (albeit uphill) walk away.
Gasworks Park is another great park in Seattle. It's located at one end of Lake Union- just across the Lake from Seattle. From Gasworks parks you have beautiful panoramic views of downtown Seattle. A perfect photo op!
The park itself is usually full of people walking, flying kites or just sitting and enjoying the view. The park is on the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company gassification plant, and much of the former plant is still there- leaving a weird but cool place to explore. And to take lots of pictures! Your kids will love this park, it's unlike any other.
This is a place with a stunning view and nice paces for walking or bicycling. It is just fabulous to see all these boats passing through to Lake Washington or Puget Sound. It is perfect for relaxing and kite flying. There are some house boats close by which we liked to see as well.
Why was this my favorite park growing up? 1) It has a huge kite flying hill. As a kid it seemed monumentally high. It seemed to get smaller as I grew older but the thrill of running down it at full speed never wavered. In highschool people used to ride blocks of ice down it. 2) It has these cool old gasworks machines that you can climb on. They are unfortunately more roped off than they used to be but I think you can still explore. 3) It has what may be the worlds tallest fire pole. Good, clean fun if not a bit scary. 4) For the adults - one of the great views of the Seattle skyline. Makes a great spot for fireworks viewing. When in Seattle make sure to go "fill up" at Gasworks.
