On sunny days, the beach is fantastic. Warm water, white sand, and great restaurants are directly on the beach. It is pristine and truly magnificent. Boca Grande is a cute island town that is close by. The last time we were there a few weeks ago, 2 manatee swam by us and were curious. We have seen dolphins and sometimes we have seen sharks close to shore. There are numerous sting rays in the summer months. There aren't many people and we adore it.
If you're family loves to spend time at a peaceful beach, then a visit to Gasparilla Island would be ideal! It's a relaxing place to enjoy wildlife spotting. We saw all sorts of migratory birds, dolphins just offshore and small fish in the surf. The waves are calm and the breeze was blowing off the Gulf of Mexico which kept us cool even though we were in the full sun. Wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a nice, wide brimmed hat are musts!
My husband and I finally got a day all to ourselves without the kids and decided to head to Gasparilla Island to relax on the beach. The drive there is absolutely beautiful, especially driving over the two-lane bridge to get onto the island. Once on the beach, there was only a handful of families there, so we felt like we had the beach all to ourselves. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to visit the lighthouse which is right on the beach, but this just gives us an excuse to come back. Instead, we sat on the beach watching seagulls and pelicans fly by us. But the best thing was THIS.... as we were getting ready to leave, we looked out onto the water and saw not one, but TWO DOLPHINS!!! They were swimming together and coming up for air at the same time. It was amazing. I wasn't fast enough to snap a good picture, but it was pretty inspiring. This is the second time I have been here and the second time I have seen dolphins here too. This is definitely the place to go to relax on a quiet afternoon. So if you decide to visit this island, bring zip-lock bags for the seashells and a camera with a good zoom for the dolphins. Enjoy!
The park around this hundred-year-old lighthouse provides a good place for a picnic and swim. Stay out of the waters in Boca Grande Pass; they’re deep and swift.
