IF you are ever in the Tampa area in February you MUST check out the Gasparilla Children's Parade. It's a WONDERFUL opportunity for kids of all ages to watch floats and get "beaded" or catch beads thrown from the floats. DO NOT...repeat...DO NOT TAKE ANY KIDS TO THE ADULT DAY OR NIGHT PARADES!!! Drunken, raucous behavior there! But DEFINITELY give the Children's parade a shot!
"arrrgggg....matey" Downtown Tampa has a childrens parade every year which includes tons of fun and beads. Kids (and parents) line the streets on either side and big ships filled with pirates float down the road throwing numerous beads of all shapes and sizes.....other small trinkets are thrown as well (free Happy Meal tokens, footballs, cups, shirts, stuffed animals, etc). Usually it lasts from morning till late afternoon (3-4ish) and would suggest that you get there early, especially if you are driving yourself as the parking does get filled up pretty quickly. Bus lines and trolleys as well as taxis are available.
The gasparilla Kids Parade is so much fun for all thi children that attend. They love catching beads and seeing the huge beatiful floats that come by with music, more beads and sometimes their favorite character! Not to mention its super cute to see al the kids dress up like little pirates!
This annual event, held on one day in January/February (January 22, 2011 from 11am to 7:30pm this year), is an offshoot of the more famous Gasparilla Pirate Invasion and Parade of Pirates celebration but it attracts thousands of pint-sized pirates all searching for one thing....beads! Bring your family out to this alcohol-free event and plan to be amazed. The crowds make parking a challenge but there are plenty of reasons swashbuckle your way through the masses. It's fun!
