Located in the Blivas Science and Technology Center. Recently added to G.Wiz - 10 new exhibits. A new autogiro is hung in the main exhibit area which will soon be paired with a flight simulator that is being built right now. There are also some new renewable energy exhibits being built and they have just been gifted the entire collection of the Jim Gary 20th Century Dinosaurs which will migrate to Florida over the next year.
I brought my children to this museum last summer (they were 10 and 13). The museum was very small and the interactive area was ok, but minimal. The kids got bored pretty quickly as soon as they finished exploring this area. Upstairs they had a pirate's exhibit, which was pretty cool, but again, nothing too exciting. Some of the interactive exhibits didn't work correctly or just didn't hold their attention. Overall, I was glad that I didn't have to pay for this museum (I have a family membership at one of their reciprocal partners, so I was able to get into this museum for free). It wasn't worth it.
I took my 3 year old to G Wiz, and was pretty let down. It's definitely not designed for children under 8. If my daughter was over 8, she might enjoy it, but there is nothing really for a young child. There are some things that can keep a child under 8 busy, but not for long. Bottom line, is that if you had an older child, it would be more ideal.
I visited G. Whiz today with my 8 year old daughter and my 6 year old niece. I visit Sarasota every year and was saving a trip to this museum for a special occasion. What a disappointment. We had a cloudy day and thought it would be the perfect thing to do. I am still wondering if I missed something-there was really one big sectioned off room with some very old and outdated exhibits. You had to read long explainations of how and why to use the materials which of course my kids just ignored. It was very dark and dreary. There was a live science "show" that a man gave about energy that was the only saving grace. The kids quickly lost interest and we went upstairs to see the rest of the exhibits only to find that it was an art gallery with big "Do Not Touch" signs all over the place. Huh? We ended our trip to go out the playground outside which was fun to play on but the grounds were covered with trash from the overflowing garbage cans. Yuck. I heard great things about this museum over the years and was so surprised at how different it was from what I expected.
One would expect Sarasota’s version of a hands-on museum to be brighter, artsier, edgier than the rest—and it is. Two floors of exhibits have the kids doing everything from sprint racing to creating cartoons. The cool outdoor playground makes a fun
outing on its own. The museum continually grows with state-of-the-art exhibits.
