Friendship Hill is the home of Swiss-born patriot Albert Gallatin, who was elected to the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, played an important role in the Whiskey Rebellion, and was Secretary of the Treasury, a member of the team that negotiated the end of the War of 1812, minister to France, and sometimes called the “father” of the National Road.
There are 8 miles of trails and a picnic area. You can take a pleasant walk to the grave of Gallatin’s first wife, Sophia Allegre. The site overlooks the Monongahela River, but watch out for the steep banks. Also, be aware that there may be potential dangers in old buildings and mine works that have not yet been restored. Since the house is sometimes closed, it’s wise to call ahead.
