The free speech monument is a slate wall on which citizens are allowed to write anything they wish. Adults will appreciate the symbolic nature of the structure, while kids will like to have the opportunity to write or draw on the wall using the colored chalk provided.
A refreshing change from monumental edifices and statues, check out this living tribute to freedom of speech. The 54-foot-long, two-sided slate wall is a public chalkboard for free expression of anything from art to politics. Reminding visitors of the importance of such freedom, the First Amendment is permanently inscribed on one segment. Kids from toddler to teen can reach it, as the slate extends right from the ground up to 7.5 feet high; it’s wiped clean every two weeks or so. There’s also a podium designed to encourage speechifying, both planned and impromptu. To see what other folks have contributed to the slate, see www.tj center.org/monument.
A fantastic place to bring the kids. Parents and kids alike will love the opportunity to make their mark on this giant chalkboard. Be silly or profound in your markings- it's your choice. The Children's Discovery Museum is right next store as well, making for a great afternoon trip!
