Call one of the visitor centers in Fredericksburg for specific directions or more informtion on one or all of the four battlefields: Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitors Center, Highway 3 West, (540) 786-2880; and Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitors Center, 1013 Lafayette Boulevard, (540) 373-6122; www.nps.gov/frsp.
The national military park stretches more than 8,300 acres, includes four different battlefields, and is run by the National Park Service. The entire drive is about 75 miles, including driving between and within the parks. In the parks you can see the Old Salem Church, the Spotsylvania Court House, and the Marye’s Heights National Cemetery along with trenches, historic buildings, interpretative trails, exhibit shelters, maps, monuments, and, of course, the landscape where these important battles were fought.
The tours take about three hours for each battlefield, so plan a couple of days if you want the full tour. Be selective. For an audiotape driving tour or other information, stop in one of the two visitor centers that cover all four battlefields in the park. The battlefields include Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House.
