The annual Fall Festival is NOT TO BE MISSED! There are so many opportunities to learn about the past. I wish the festival was all month long as this is a place that you could visit multiple times and still learn something new. My young children LOVED touring the old homestead house and still talk about it (a year later). These type of areas are fast becoming extinct so please support this preservation of history!
Sometimes a transplanted midwesterner can feel that Denver is dry and urban, and depending on where you live, lacking in trees. We like to visit Four Mile Historic Park in October during pumpkin patch season, especially on a rainy day! The crowds are smaller and the grounds come to life-the clanking of the blacksmith drowns out traffic, and the cider and pumpkins under the trees suddenly make you feel that you could be in the midwest 100 years ago. Our kids ages 5-10 loved it, especially the muddy boots.
This is an easily accessible "step back in time" visit - right in Denver. Our favorite visit was during one of their October weekends - pumpkin patch, vendors, bake sale, cider - a beautiful fall activity with kids. It was great to see some metalsmithing demonstrations, etc.
