Fort Sumter is located on an island in Charleston harbor and is only accessible by boat. SpiritLine Cruises offers daily rides to Fort Sumter from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center. They have a second location from which to depart in Mt. Pleasant at the Patriots Point Maritime Museum. The 2 hour and 15 minute tour consists of approximately 35 minutes of narration while cruising historic Charleston Harbor, 1 hour at Fort Sumter, and then 30 minutes of continued narration on the return trip.
The trip to Fort Sumter is a lot of fun! Try to get there early enough to be seated under cover on the boat, otherwise it's too windy to hear the tour guide. Once you get to fort, you can spend an hour looking around before your boat heads back, but if you want to stay longer you can stay two hours and just take the next boat back. A cheap activity, but lots of fun!
Our family took this tour in April 2006 and had a great time. My husband & I went along with 7 of our kids, my inlaws and our nanny. The kids LOVED seeing the dolphins swimming along side the ship and we really enjoyed the freedom to walk around the fort at our own pace, allowing the kids to explore and learn on their own.
Beautiful scenery as well :)
I didn't think my little ones would enjoy it but of course the boat made up for it. Just make sure you pack drinks and snacks if it is hot. The kids love the boat ride and the adults love the history and the trip out to Fort Sumter. The museum is free so that is always a plus if you don't want to shell out money for the tour.
We had a great time on this tour. We took the ferry over to the Fort. At the Fort there was a small history lesson on the Fort and there was a small reenactment. You were then allowed to go tour the Fort and get back on the boat when you were finished. The boat had a small concession stand with food and drinks. Neat trip and reasonably priced.
