Fort Sumter National Monument commemorates the Families can access Fort Sumter by ferry which leaves from two locations: Liberty Square (340 Concord Street, Charleston, SC), and Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum (40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC).
For me and for our daughter, the highlight of this activity was definitely the ferry ride back and forth to the monument. Of course, the monument itself is worth visiting as well, but if you're not much of a military history buff, the time that you are stuck on the island waiting for the ferry ride back gets a little tedious.
But the ferry ride itself is definitely worth going! We loved spotting dolphins swimming alongside in the water.
Fort Sumter is great for those that love history. It defintely has that going for it. The museum could be a little bit better, but it does give a lot of history. The gift shop is too small and hard to get around. The guide does give a great lecture that is very intersting. You can see breath taking views of the Ashley River Bridge from the fort as well. The boat ride out is excellent and you can possible see dolphins. We saw several and even have four swimming with out boat. It is worth the trip.
