Restrooms are available outside of Fort Point.
A good time to go see Fort Point is right after you go see the Golden Gate Bridge. It is an old brick civil war fort. It is a fun place for the kids to run around without worry. It has some interesting exhibits of the time when the fort was in use and some interesting stories about the people that lived and worked there. It gives you an intesting view of the Golden Gate Bridge you won't get anywhere else. All ages of people will enjoy this.
This old building offers a lot of stairs, empty rooms and wind blowing through its holes. You have to walk down the hill and across a busy parking lot to reach this no-entrance-fee-required building. Kids can have lot of fun running at the ground floor, but steep and narrow stairs aren't the safest or most comfortable place to be. History lovers will be amazed, but for other people Fort Point will be a cold waste of time. Don't forget to dress warm!
A Civil War–era fort where costumed docents show you around a gunpowder storehouse, barracks, jail cells, and a museum of military artifacts. Little boys really go for the swords, guns, and cannons.
Take photos here of the bridge with waves crashing and sailboarders in the bay. You can fish along the seawall. A beach at the foot of the cliffs on the west side of Fort Point is sometimes enjoyed by nude sun worshippers.
A good place to visit if your family is interested in history. The maze-like architecture of the fort is interesting, and there are re-created living areas to give an idea of what being posted there was like. Several cannons and such for kids to check out. It's situated directly beneath the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, which gives a different perspective.
This is a great place to go for a short stop when out and about to see other things. This will not take a large portion of your day.
This can be really fun for kids who are learning their American history. This was a real army fort, integral to protecting the Bay Area during the civil war (along with the Battery and Alcatraz). Today, they have many re-enactments of things they did during those early days - - which can be fascinating and fun. Check it out!
