Fort Mifflin played a strategic role in the Revolutionary War. In 1777 more than 200 British warships sailed up the Delaware River with needed supplies for British troops occupying Philadelphia. For seven weeks the little fort held back the mightiest navy in the world. Although it was almost completely destroyed in the process, Fort Mifflin never surrendered.
On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, in addition to tours there are militia-guard drills. A blacksmith also demonstrates how weapons were made in this period.
