A sea-breezy complex of former military buildings on the waterfront, where cultural events are held on weekends. There are small museums and frequent weekend festivals; parking is free for up to four or twelve hours, depending on the parking spot location. The Children’s Art Center in Building C offers drop-in and extended art workshops such as clay, printing, and painting for children 27 months to 10 years (415–771–0292; www.childrensartscenter.org).
Check the Web site for performances by Flash Family Improv, the Young Performers Theatre, and other family-oriented troupes. Every year the San Francisco Blues Festival (415–826–6837) is held on the lawns above Fort Mason. There are easy-to-find public restrooms in each of the Fort Mason buildings.
Cooks and Company is a terrific take-out counter for sandwiches, soups, and scrumptious desserts; picnic tables just outside, or take the five-minute walk to the Marina Green.
Fort Mason not only has a beautiful view of the Bay, there is just a ton of open space for your toddler to practice all their new found walking, running, rolling, turning stunts. The constant stream of dogs, bikers, kite fliers, and segway tours add plenty of visual interest for any child.
For older kids, pick up a kite to fly from the Safeway across the street. The winds are typically high coming off the Bay.
