The Mansion is CLOSED Mondays, Holidays, & January- April.
My son got to go to Fort Hunter last year on his field trip. He loved it! There's really not a ton to see, but the boys were fascinated by it. I think it's a great, educational trip for school age children. I plan to take my other children there when they get old enough to appreciate it.
Just outside Center City, on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River, stands Fort Hunter Mansion, surrounded by its outbuildings and park. The Federal style mansion, built in 1814 by Archibald McAllister, is in remarkably good condition. While touring the house, open the closet doors to discover surprises such as sets of china or collections of fashionable clothing left behind by Helen Reily, last owner of the house.
In the guest-room closet, you can peek at Mrs. Reily’s bonnets (she had some one hundred), fans, hat pins, and other accessories. She also left a collection of dolls, toy soldiers, and even paper dolls. The dollhouse features a tiny hobby horse, a little dog curled up in a minute dog bed, and postcards glued to the walls for paintings. And don’t miss the garden with its spicebush, smokebush, and boxwood. The Web site offers a downloadable walking tour.
In December, when the mansion is decorated for Christmas, it is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 7:00 P.M. In September Fort Hunter Day brings the whole park alive with bagpipe music (in honor of the McAllisters), arts and crafts, children’s activities, food, and more. Programs for children and families are offered periodically.
