Welcome to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. During your visit, you’ll experience the sights and sounds of “The Waters of the Cape Fear” from freshwater streams and swamps, to coastline habitats, to reefs and the open ocean. And, be sure to meet Luna, a rare albino alligator.
Children 5 and under: FREE. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day.
While history buffs will enjoy this place it is not going to be a favorite with the kids. It's a museum and is not geared towards children, there is lots of looking and no interactive things. They might enjoy running around the bunkers outside. I say skip this and keep driving down to the aquarium!
This was fascinating to visit and get a chance to walk around, educating the kids on our own. It was a great educational tour rich in US history, with minimum crowds and the right "price" ;)
It was a perfect place to visit in the spring, but might be a bit hot in the summer.
Fort Fisher was one of the Confederacy’s last major strongholds during the Civil War. The site includes a monument commemorating the largest land–sea battle of the war, which was fought in January 1865. Also at the earthen fort is a reconstructed gun emplacement, and you can walk along an interpretive history trail. The fort’s museum features displays on the Confederate defense system, dioramas, an audiovisual show, and war artifacts. Picnic facilities are also available.
