Every Labor Day weekend my whole family drives the 2 hour drive to Fort Bridger, Wyoming for the mountain man rendezvous. I have only been to Fort Bridger for the rendezvous and I always love it. However, I would guess that my rating would not be so high on an everyday visit to Fort Bridger. This past year we had all ages represented with the youngest at 15 months to the oldest at 70.
The food there is always wonderful. My uncles love going for the buffalo burgers, while I tend towards the Navajo tacos. There is also a stand with homemade root beer and cream soda that I frequent throughout the day (as they give a great deal on refills!) With such a large assortment of food vendors everyone can easily find something to make their taste buds dance.
Walking through the teepees and tents is a treat. I love seeing what creative things have been made. This year my 3 year old found a homemade “princess” dress for $25, she still wears it all the time. Each vendor is so different so it is worth it to take time to find a treasure that will delight. My treasure this year was some homespun llamas wool that I later made into a hat. I love it and only wish I had bought more. It is a really fun place to find unique gifts.
My children have their favorites too! They love the candy cannon. It is worth checking the schedule not to miss this popular event. My daughter loves the Native American dancing, especially when members of the audience are invited to join in. There is also a popular creek, so change of clothes might be a smart idea.
I love this event because it is fun, something different, and it gives a little perspective on history. I loved when I was little and Fort Bridger came up in the history books because I had been there! I hope my kids can get excited about that too as we keep this tradition alive.
We went here with our children (ages 8, 6, 4, and 1). We spent about 90 minutes at the park. Many of the buildings were not of interest to our children. The reconstructed fort, the jail, and the wagons were of interest. They had more fun looking in the stream for crawdads than looking at the buildings. For the parents, there was a lot there. Not much was going on the Friday we were there. It was very interesting to realize this was the fort mentioned in the pioneer diaries. We wished we had taken more time but there will be a next time.
While Fort Bridge can be visited at other times, the only time I have been there is during the labor day weekend rendezvous. It is a gathering of people that reenact the time of the mountain men. There are also many Native American groups there as well. There is a lot to see. You will be able to visit traders tents, visit the old historic buildings, eat great food, and participate or watch many different activities. This is something we do every year and never grow tired of it.!
