Once the nineteenth-century dumping grounds for Brooklyn’s garbage, this 1,225-acre parkland was created by the legendary Robert Moses in the 1930s. With the world on the brink of war, he envisioned an international exposition proclaiming peace and prosperity, and Flushing Meadows became the site of the 1939 World’s Fair. In 1964 the World’s Fair made a second appearance here, anchored by the 38 ton gilded globe called the Unisphere. Wonderful remnants of those fairs remain and house museums of art and science today.
The Queens Zoo Wildlife Center and Children's Farm, home to 250 animals, features creatures from North America, both domestic and wild, ranging from bison and bobcats to sheep and rabbits.
