I went here with my 5th grade class in the 80s. Let's just say it was a life changing experience and that I've been dying to go back ever since!
We finally went a few days ago. The parking is very easy, and even with an 8 month old, it was easy to navigate the area. I wrapped her up in a large wrap close to my body like I always do near tide pools. It's cold, so bring jackets, and even at a fairly high +2/3 tide, there were interesting things to be seen.
There was a dead seal, which my husband noticed, my sight is bad and I thought it was a rock, so beware of that if you're bringing question-askers. We told the guy about it, and he said he knew like he'd said it for the 30th time that hour. 7:30 pm.
Very wonderful location, plenty of brochures and pamphlets available at the house.
I love coming here because the tidepools are amazing! Make sure to wear warm clothing and waterproof shoes like boots. There are a variety of animals to see and kids are so fascinated by the creatures! Find out when the low tide is and make a morning out of it!
A 0.5-mile easy trail loops through the tangled garden of an old estate, a spooky for-est of Monterey cypress, and along a bluff above some of the richest tidepools on the Pacific Coast. At low tide a kaleidoscope of sponges, sea anemones, starfish, crabs, mollusks, and fish emerge. A California sea lion may be watching you, and you can see gray whales offshore December through April. With a special fishing license, try your hand at rock fishing. For the best tidepooling call ahead to find out when the low tides are expected. Docent tours are available. Restrooms, picnic tables, interpretive center.
This marine reserve is unique because when the tide is low, it reveals a flat rock shelf with tide pools carved out of it. It is pretty easy for even young children aged 3 and under to walk around and get a close up view of the wonderful ocean creatures. Children are simply delighted at the sea snails, mussels, sea stars, sea anemones and a wide variety of kelp and seaweed to touch and smell. A delight for the senses. For lunch, children will like the fish and chips at the Moss Beach Distillery which has an amazing view of the great Pacific, although prices are steep.
