We went to the Children's Museum for the first time today!!! I expected my daughter to have fun but I never really thought my mother and I would have JUST as much fun!!! It was great and I will be telling everyone...maybe even strangers on the street...to make sure they go here!!!
When my family went camping in Erie, PA we found out about this museum. It was inexpensive, and was very well worth the visit. When we first arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff member who took our money, and then we went on to the fun. I couldn't get over how great this place was in teaching kids about all different things. My kids had so much fun learning, and the oldest is 7! They learned about magnets with different hands on tools. They learned about rivers, rocks, even recycling. One thing they could do was put a plastic bottle into the hand of a dummy (named Recycle Michael), and he would toss it into the recycle bin next to him when you pushed a button on a fake parking meter. They were also able to try to lift up bags of "garbage" with a pulley that demonstrated how much gets thrown away all the time. There was also a bubble area where you step into the middle of a hoop and slowly raise it up. If successful (which it took a lot of tries to be) you will have a bubble surrounding you.
Soon we headed upstairs and found even more fun. The kids were able to blow balls in tubes with a hose that blows air, and see where it goes (what path it takes). They were also able to play on stage, "shop" at the grocery store, read, face paint, and more. My 3-year-old and I had fun sitting at a table across from each other, separated by a small divider (my 6 and 7-year-olds were still playing with the balls with daddy). I would pick a shape that was in front of me and tell him which one I chose. On his side he would look at all the same shapes I had, and then hold up the correct one. It thrilled me to know how much he knew! I guess you can say that this place helped me learn even more about my own kids.
I wish we had more time to spend there, but unfortunately it is in the city, and the longest we could get the meter to go was 2 hours. I know we want to go back to Erie, and when we do we will definitely be putting this on our list of things to do.
For small children the highlight of Erie is the expERIEnce Children’s Museum, housedin an old livery stable. The museum is aimed at kids ages two to twelve, but those under age eight seem to enjoy it the most. According to one of the museum’s curtors, “This is a hands-on museum, which means that kids can come in and break things, and after they leave, we fix them.”
Since some of the exhibits rotate, it's hard to comment on this activity specifically, but just know that your kids will love it! The exhibits are interactive and fun—what more could the kids want?
There's a pretend grocery store upstairs that many kids spend hours in. There's lots of pretend food and registers for pretend play. And for the performers among us, there's a stage with musical instruments the kids can try out.
It really is a nice museum. Give it a try.
