Avid outdoor types can explore the eerily lonesome terrain of the Ten Thousand Islands via the 98-mile Wilderness Waterway canoe trail. (Do this in cool weather.) Canoeists must register with park rangers. You can paddle potions of the trail; the entire length takes at least eight days. Chickee (Indian-thatched) hut landings provide rustic sheter for campers. Several outfitters run guided tours within the park. Canoeists must bring all of their own gear unless outfitted by one of these businesses. A list of canoe rentals, outfitters, and recommended gear, plus neces-sary charts, guidebooks, and complete information are available from the U.S. Department of the Intrior, National Park Service, Everglades National Park, P.O. Box 279, Homestead 33030.
