Indio is paradise for polo lovers. If you want to see polo in action, plan to have breakfast or lunch at the Empire Polo Club’s Tack Room Tavern. This former horse shelter turned restaurant is open seven days a week from 7:00 A.M.to 9:00 P.M.Off the beaten path at Avenue 51 and Monroe, the setting is peaceful and a far cry from the weekend crowds and traffic. There is a great children’s menu with burgers, hot dogs, and mac and cheese. The park covers 175 acres of landscaped grounds, including five world-class polo fields, a picturesque rose garden, and the tropical Medjhool Lake (named for the delectable dates that grow on the Indio date farms). The Coachella Valley Music Festval calls this place home. In 2006, on the last weekend of April, Madonna performed in the Sahara Dance Tent.
