Practice barking along with the giant seals of San Simeon. While you're there, keep an eye out for any of the other 15,000 animals that call California's Central Coast their home.
We came in April and the mama elephant seals and their babies were messmerizing. The smells, sounds, and views of all these baby seals, mama seals, teeenager seals is something I will never forget. The little seals calling out for mom to move so they could nurse was amazing. We kept standing and watching, then moving a little to look at some more and pointing out the cute things each one was doing to each other. We stayed a long time and left only because we thought we should do something else in the area. Awesome nature experience!
The boys love going here and watching the elephant seals. During the spring season there's a lot more activity, but year round pretty much seems to have a lot of populations. The pups are the cutest. Although somewhat boring tbh, the boys don't like to stay for too long but do enjoy practicing taking pictures of the seals. Be sure to pick up the informational brochures and learn about the different seasons and facts with the kids, makes a good 'field trip' sort of trip.
This is a great way to see the elephant seals. In the past we have gone to Ano Nuevo to see the elephant seals. At Ano Nuevo you have to hike out to the beach with a docent. Here in San Simeon you observe them from above but there is no hike for the little ones. The elephant seals are quite impressive. It's worth a trip to San Simeon to see them.
My kid loved this. A good break from the long drive. It's very near the Hearst Castle so be sure to drop by when you're in the area. Make sure you dress warmly especially the little ones, as it can be windy!
Our 2 year old was amazed by the sight of the elephant seals. We had him bring his binoculars which made for extra fun (even though they don't work, he felt pretty special). He was shocked by the sound the seals make. The only down side is there's no bathroom nearby. Luckily we had a change of pants!!! Check into what the seals are doing at different times of the year. We went in the winter and got to see lots of baby seals and even a female seal giving birth. Very cool!
Every kid will love this activity!!!!
These animals are hilarious. They make the funniest noises and are just incredible to watch. Try to check on the seasons because young children may not want to watch when the male elephant seals start to fight. It only happens at a certain time of the year, but sometimes it can be a little scary. The best time is to go when they are having babies or when the pups are already there. There is usually a volunteer there to answer questions and watch the public so no one bothers them. Make sure to keep a good eye on your child!
Our family loves to visit the Elephant Seals even if mommy finds it a little tough. They are really interesting creatures and it's fun to watch them from the bluff in San Simeon on the boardwalk. There are usually docents there who love to talk about them and give you informed information about them, their habitats and their lifestyle. Because you can't and wouldn't want to play on the beach near them, watching them and talking to the docent is about all you can do there. However, if you are planning on making a trip up the coast, you should go to San Simeon Beach, hike on the trail to the point, eat at Main Street Grill (yum), and visit the seals.
