DuPage Children's Museum is made up of many different exhibit neighborhoods and has three floors--each one special in its own way. Each neighborhood is packed with exciting ways to explore art, math, science and how they work together in the world. There are also three Young Explorers neighborhoods (adjacent to our other exhibit neighborhoods) designed for children up to 24 months.
Family Fun Nights each Friday with different themes as well. Be sure to check their calendar for more events.
The Nitty Gritty: We went here on a their Family Fun Nights on a Friday evening In September. I purchased a Groupon good for 2 admissions. There was plenty of free parking.
The fun: Since it was a Family Fun Night, the museum was opened a little bit later. We basically had the museum to ourselves. One of the reasons we came here was to check out their new train exhibit. Located on the second floor, I was expecting well....more. There was a model train that was fun to look at and even costumes to wear. Maybe my son would have enjoyed it more had he been older? Besides the train exhibit, there were plenty of other sections my curious little toddler could play with to keep him busy. There was a free performance that Friday located in the Lower Level where we could buy ice cream also.
Son's fav moment: Getting wet in the Waterways section and making huge bubbles. Making music in their Music Room.
Parent's fav moment: Watching a performance while eating ice cream
Bottom Line: Would come here again maybe for their special events, but not just for the train exhibit.
Tip: For all the train lovers, this museum is located right by the Metra train station, so if you time it correctly you can see trains coming and going right from the parking lot.
Great children's museum. So much for the kids under five to do. It is hard to go with more than one kid, because they will want to head in different directions and it's hard to keep an eye on them. The dark room was a big hit with my kids, but they also liked the water play area too.
A bit of a drive for us but we go to meet friends. They have sections where they can play with water, and bubbles, and my kids always spend over an hour in he area. making bubbles is a favorite. my kids are highly entertained with this room. Areas for playing with light (catching your own shadow); using shapes to create puzzles between plexi-glass, drawing in the dark, musical instruments, watching balls move up and down through this engineering device and then you can create your own and a wind section with a wind tunnel.
DuPage Children's Museum is a great trip for the whole family, or for playdates with friends. Most of the exhibits are for ages 3 and up, but some areas are set aside for two years and younger. Even when she was 18 months old our daughter still enjoyed some of the exhibits for older kids, like the percussion room. Make sure to pack a lunch or plan to enjoy eating out at some of the local restaurants nearby.
My family has had a pass to the DuPage Children's Museum for some time now. It has offered us days of fun for all four of my kids across many ages. There is always something to keep them entertained. It does get busy on non-school days/holidays, but well worth it if you're looking for something to do on a rainy day!
My kids and I used to go here about once a week in the winter! It has wonderful activities to challenge kids creatively, I love the water area and the huge light bright. They also provide different classes with art and music. My son always loved the music area where he could bang on the drums and xylophones.
The Dupage Children's Museum is a great place for children to explore and access their creative side. My son loves the WaterWays. I find that DCM is fun for kids of all ages and even adults too! It is a fabulous way to spend time with your children while they learn. The free parking is great, however admission prices are a little steep. Though it is worth the splurge, we don't go too often.
My 18mo old girl had a great time at the Children's Museum. There are a lot of different things to do for all ages from babies to tween. We went on a day that was packed with children but we still had fun. The employees are constantly cleaning up after the children seems exhausting but very much appreciated. The only thing I didn't like is that anyone could grab my child and walk out the door. I feel they need more security to prevent child abduction. They obviously haven't had any issues so far but I like to feel secure when it comes to my child.
I bring my daughter here at least once per week for her to explore her senses. She seems to enjoy this place very much. The exhibits really catch her eyes, and I catch myself a break from entertaining her all the time!
There are three young toddler (explorer) areas in which I let her play in because I know she will understand those, but the big kid areas she stays away from since they appear to be more intimidating and much more advanced for her age (she's only 16-months old). The water exhibit fascinates her, too.
We've been members here since my twins were two, and we love it. The long water table, air blowers, and huge tinker toy-like things are a few of our favorite activities. My older boys (8) love the wood shop, and my preschooler loves it all. Pack a lunch and spend the day...you'll love it!
The DuPage Children's Museum is always a hit for our family. If you're visiting downtown Chicago, this may seem too far to go but RECONSIDER! You can hop on the BNSF train from Union Station and enjoy a nice ride that drops you off within walking distance from the museum -- just head West to the walkway that goes over the highway, then south for a block.
The museum is ideal for kids 8 and under but we've taken kids up to 10 and they enjoy it, too. Favorite areas always tend to be the water/bubble play, and the section where kids play with air streams.
Bonus: There's a special area for nursing moms, and wonderful family bathrooms.
We just loved this children's museum! We have a reciprocal membership, so it was free. But we made the long drive from downtown Chicago just to go here twice in one week. (The Chicago Children's Museum is not nearly as good). This provided hours of fun and stimulation for our 2 year old. There are lots of interactive exhibits, which are very unique and allow children' to stay active. It seemed as if the older children were having just as much fun. It's a nice, open and pleasant space, with a huge picture window in the front where everyone can get a little sun in the winter, without freezing. The bonus was that we received a coupon at the front desk for three free burritos from Chipotle. And because our entry tickets were free with our reciprocal membership, it was if we were paid in burritos to go there and have fun!
If your are looking for something fun to do during the long, cold winter months you need to sign up for a membership at the Dupage Children's Museum. All ages will have fun here. For the older kids, they have a building area where you use real hammers, nails, saws, etc. to construct something. They have toddler areas for the little ones. Our favorite areas are the bubble area, water works, and airworks.
Great museum with lots of different activities. The children love the wind tunnels, the oversized tinker toys, the carpentry center, and the water areas. There are fun music and light exhibits too. The weights and measures area is fun. We have also really enjoyed the toddler area.
What a fun indoor activity for pre-schoolers. Our favorite - the water activity, followed by the wind tunnel (a great place to dry off!) We look forward to trying our hand at the woodworking activity soon. The excitement and cheers that burst out whenever we pass the museum says it all.
Brightly painted in red, yellow, and blue on the outside and boasting 20,000 square feet of exhibit space on the inside, this three-story building is a delight for
families with young children. Most of the hands-on exhibit areas are on the ground floor, which is divided into five main sections: Creativity Connections, Make It Move, Build It, AirWorks, and WaterWays. It’s easy to pass from one section into the next—in fact, almost too easy.
Nice interactive children's museum. It seems geared towards younger children, age 5 and under. There are a few things to keep older kids entertained, but not for long periods of time. The open floor plan is a bonus with multiple kids who want to explore different areas, but only on a day when it is not too busy.
I personally like this museum because of its size--two main floors with lots to do, but not so large that it's overwhelming. Water play, fun interactive things for the kids, good location in downtown area, with easy parking. Also areas for toddlers, plus good bathroom facilities (large and clean!).
This is a great interactive museum. The only bummer for me was I don't live super close so the 1 year membership that I had didn't really get it's full money's worth. I had a newborn and a toddler at the time. Now I'd get alot of use out of it again. Love the open floor plan...easy to keep track of multiple kids with their varied interests and running around. Like their water area better than Kohl's museum up north.
I took my son here when he was about 18 months and we didn't have enough time to play with everything (we were there for about 1.5 hours). There's so much to play with for his stage of development. The infant/toddler areas are strategically placed so that parents can keep a watchful eye on their older kids who are playing in the rest of the area.
One of the main highlights for my son was the life-size version of Lite Brite. It was really cool and something I had never seen anywhere else. You basically get these colored glow sticks that you can stick into a huge peg board and create different patterns and pictures.
The building and construction area was really cool although he was too small for it. The kids who were in there hammering away looked like they were having so much fun. There was a fun water and wind exploration area that looked fun too, but we didn't have time.
We loved the car/transportation area upstairs. It was really neat how you could change the hubcaps on the car and stack them on like weights on a barbell. The museum is also located right across from the train tracks, so trains go by every so often which my toddler LOVED!
The staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
