"A true colonial experience"

The Duke of Gloucester St is the main street in Colonial Wmsbg.  Anyone can walk down the street and appreciate the period buildings and people in colonial costume.  The street is less than a mile long, but strolling down it you can see so much and you feel like you have traveled back in time.  It is great for kids to come here and be able to really feel like a part of the Colonial atmosphere.  They literally become a part of it, and then the things they've heard about or studied make so much more sense.

You only pay when you actually enter the shops on this street and hear what the re-enactors have to say.  If this is of interest to you, you can pay at the Visitor's Center.  If not, just stroll along and take in he activities and people and scenery of colonial times.
Located on Duke of Gloucester Street are the Harnessmaker-Saddler; Bruton Parish Church, Palace Green, the John Greenhow Store, the James Geddy House, the Mary Dickinson Store, the Shoemaker's Shop, Market Square, the Courthouse, the Magazine and Guardhouse, Chowning's Tavern, the Ludwell-Paradise House, the Printing Office, the Prentis Store, the Post Office and Bookbindery, M. Dubois Grocer's Store, the Mary Stith Shop, Tarpley's Store, Wetherburn's Tavern, the Milliner, the Silversmith, the Raleigh Tavern with its Bake Shop, the King's Arms Tavern, the Pasteur & Galt Apothecary Shop, and the Public Records Office among other buildings.  Totally worth visiting for kids of all ages.

"Don't miss the Cheese Shop or the candy store!"

Duke of Gloucester Street is a great place to take the kids to wander up and down and through the shops.  It is just a short walk from the stocks which the kids will love to try out (and you will love to take their picture of them locked up!) and all things Colonial Williamsburg.  While you wander around the Duke of Gloucester Street stop in the Cheese Shop for a fabulous Virginia Ham sandwich and then head next door for a piece of fudge from the candy shop.  My kids loved running up and down the street.  It was VERY cold and there were not many people around so they had the run of the street!

"Fun with the Family"

A stroll along this main street conveys the ambience of this bustling town. Pause to peek into the stores, chat with costumed interpreters, and—a kid favorite—shop for keepsakes from clay wig curlers to quill pens.
