See the early home, factories, and farm where Washington Duke first grew and processed tobacco. The Duke family started The American Tobacco Company, the world's largest tobacco company for twenty-one years. Duke and others helped create a market for Durham-area tobacco products that eventually would make North Carolina the heart of an international tobacco empire. Many profits were invested in land and industry, but others were used for such humanitarian causes as Duke University, which is named for the family.
We offer guided tours at fifteen past the hour from 10:15AM-3:15PM!

Long before Durham was a medical center, its roots were deeply embedded in the tobacco industry. Much of this history is available for viewing at the Duke Homestead State Historic Site and Tobacco Museum. The site includes the Duke home, constructed in 1852, plus tobacco barns and two early tobacco factories. The museum chronicles the history of the tobacco industry and production, and cigarette manufacturing. A moving mannequin plants tobacco and helps bring the industry into perspective.
