"Over-rated"

This place is a great place to shop, if you are a college student.  There are few and far between places for families.  Shopping is great for adults, but my kids don't enjoy it.  There are MANY bars to choose from, but again, not a family friendly thing to do.  The shops have many interesting things to look at, but few practical items.  I enjoyed taking my sister from out of state, but she didn't end up buying anything either.

There is a theater, if you know someone who is showing their independent film, you can go see a film.  I found that there was little to photograph other than the people on the street.  The buildings were disappointing, not historic.

"Family friendly shopping, dining and sight-seeing"

While I wouldn't recommend families with small children to walk the streets of downtown Northampton late at night, I can say that I've tested this town time and again ... it has never let me down. Even with a 3 year old in tow, demanding CHEEEEE-TOS and juuuuuuice.

Older kids/teens/college-age kids will enjoy the live music venues (some are ticketed), street performers, the rooftop dining (warmer months) at the Northampton Brewery, the large burritos at Bueno y Sano, Faces, Urban Outfitters and other locally-owned shoppes on Main and Pleasant streets.

New mamas will enjoy browsing Faces as well, but can find baby-specific delights at A Child's Garden (Main St) and Northampton Wool.

Dad is going to love Northampton Brewery. Not gonna lie. :) If Dad is into the music scene, this is the place for him to check out. Down a small staircase from Northampton Wool (Pleasant St) there is one groovy collection of moderately priced vinyl at TURN IT UP! Then Dad can go back to the brewery.

For those who are local-owned shy, there is the ever-present Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks Coffee. However, may I suggest Haymarket?
I suggest Haymarket.
