"Treasure Hunting Family Fun "

Who would have thought that the world’s largest maze – and one of only a few permanent botanical mazes in the U.S. – would be found on a pineapple plantation in Hawaii?

The maze stretches over three acres and includes nearly 2 ½ miles of paths crafted from some 14,000 local Hawaiian plants. Within the maze are eight secret stations. Your goal is to find each one, obtain the requisite stencils and complete the hunt.

As you seek out your treasure, you walk through and are surrounded by the flora of the islands. There are colorful Hawaiian flowers, local birds aplenty and butterflies galore waiting to be discovered throughout the maze’s twists and turns.

Beware: This is no simple treasure hunt. If you venture into the maze with young kids, use the map to find the stations. It’s tough to know why they call doing so “cheating” because the map is tiny and difficult to read even for adults.

Bring water and a change of clothes. Water because you and the little ones will most certainly work up a thirst, and a change of clothes because treasure hunting can be dirty business.

And treat yourself to a snack after your treasure hunt. Fresh pineapple or the world-famous Dole Whip are available on site and are the perfect reward for a job well done. (Of course, snacks during the hunt are suggested, too!)

Admission to the maze is $6 for adults, $4 for kids ages 4 through 12.

"Cool Site"

The Dole Pineapple Farm is a pretty neat place to see when you're driving around the island of O'ahu. It was interesting to learn how Pineapples are farmed and shipped around the globe. You will literally see miles of Pineapples planted all around the plantation. They have a cool maze and train ride around the park. We opted not to do them because we didn't have the kids with us and they were kind of pricey. However, I would highly recommend indulging in the pineapple ice cream with fresh pineapple-chunk topping. It was delicious!

"Great Ice Cream"

The activities at the Plantation can get a little spendy, but they are fun little things to do if you have time in your trip. They have a fun little train ride through the plantation with a history of pineapple and plantation life in Hawaiian history.  There is also a large maze.  Both are separate fees.  The main focus is the gift shop and restaurant.  Everything is rather pricey, but the whipped pineapple ice cream topped with fresh pineapple is So wonderful, though!  :)

"Partial to Hawaii"

I only have good memories of our trip to Hawaii!  Ahh... so beautiful.  This plantation is on the way to the North Shore.  We took the cute train ride around the plantation and got see bananas and pineapples growing!!! It's cool to see the actual "DOLE" plantation and not just the sticker on the banana :)  They have  a little garden area to explore and koi fish to feed (our two kids loved that)  You can just hang out there and enjoy your surroundings.  The store sells many gifty items and anything pineapple you want to eat.  We tried the pineapple ice cream.  Yummy!  Definitely worth a stop.

"Pineapple Galore!"

There are several activities for your family: a little train ride, a gigantic maze, and a beautiful outdoor area to roam through and learn about the life of a pineapple. You can also buy lots of yummy pineapple treats. There is a large store selling tons of pineapple themed souvenirs and little pineapple treats to take home. We did not ride the train or go in the maze, so our visit was free (minus the things we purchased in the store). It was fun and we had a great time... I was very glad we took the time to stop.

"Worth a Look"

This is a great place to visit on your way to the North Shore.  My young children love to feed the fish at the koi pond and the train ride is nice.  Dole also features "The World's Largest Maze" and is fun for older kids.  The maze might be a drag for the very young.  The treats are always a hit here, especially the yummy Dole Whip.  Definitely worth a look if you're in the area.

"Great for ALL ages"

The Dole Pineapple Plantation was amazing! The fields were so pretty and we loved that the air smelled like Pineapples, very unexpected, we live in Minnesota and corn fields don't smell like corn! There were a lot of activities to do at the plantation! We LOVED the pineapple maze! The gardens were very pretty and the younger generation loved the playground. The museum was interesting for the adults and interactive for the kids! The restaurant was great! The kids (and I ) got pineapple drinks in a pineapple piggy bank they were able to take home! We are definitely going back!

"Dole Plantation"

If you love pineapple...this place is awesome!  Even if you don't, there is a lot to do.  They have a fun little train ride that takes you around the Plantation.  The have TONS of different treats with pineapple.  We tried the pineapple ice cream and it was so delicious.  We also had a lot of fresh pineapple that really can't be beat.  We purchases two whole pineapples to take home because we were nervous we wouldn't get through security with them.  We made it through just fine and were bummed we didn't take more home!  The Plantation is quite a bit out of the way, but the drive is really pretty.

"We went for the Dole Whips"

We used to live in Hawaii and our main reason for going here was the Dole Whips. Seeing the different types of pineapples was also pretty cool but, oddly enough, my kids' favorite activity here was feeding the Koi fish in the pond. You stand on a platform and there's a food dispenser right there. The fish swarm like crazy and it's crazy! Make sure to bring quarters though.

"If you love pineapple. . ."

This is the place to visit if you are in Hawaii.  You can see how pineapple are grown and tast all different kinds of varieties.  The view is beautiful from the plantation as well.  You can also get some great tasting coffee while you are at the plantation.  I would make the trip early in the morning before the plantation gets busy with visitors.

"Pineapple Express"

The kids will think the train ride is the best part of this visit.  My favorite part was all the various kinds of food treats you could buy.  Pineapple ice cream, sweet breads, spices, dips, candies.  And the gift shop was extremely nice, but of course extremely expensive.  If you have the time this is a nice place to visit, but not necessarily a must see.  It is a good place to go to be out and about, but yet relas, with small ones.  I'm glad that we had the opportunity to go.

"you gonna go"

It was not too good before, but they improved and turned so good place to visit!  With kids or without kids, you had better stop by and enjoy the pineapple train and feel the air and listen a Manoa DNA 's song, and of course eat a pineapple ice cream!   It is so Ono ! Plenty souveniors there and see a lot of different pineapple and other plants.  Great place.

"Fun Stop, kids will love the train!"

This is a bit of a tourist trap but fun enough to stop. The Dole whip is great here and it is really fun to show the kids how pineapples are grown, I was surpised to see them shooting up out of the ground, LOL! There is a fun little maze to do but be careful you don't end up like the "Modern Family" episode and dress your kids in Camis that day :)
Anyhow, my daughter loved the train ride it was the higlight of the stop! The only bad thig is: Try not to get drawn into buying goodies here, they are so over priced.

Just wanted to update my review with this coupon: dole-plantation.com/_literature_50053/Dole_Plantation_Brochure

"yum pineapple"

This is a really fun place to visit, and has a few different things you can do. You can visit the gift shop, and walk around for free. If you would like to do the activities which include a maze, train ride, or garden walk. you can either pay one price to do all three or pick and choose and pay separately. the train ride is fun, and kids love it, i absolutely loved the maze. This place is tons of fun, and you can't leave without trying the pineapple ice cream.

"Probably good if you have time"

It's probably good if you have more time in the island and have nothing else to do. So visit all others first and visit this last. This was on our way anyway so we thought of stopping by and have some drink like what most of the people do.  We probably will take the train tour next time just because my son loves trains. But I would still look for a cheaper train ride first.

"A great place for families"

In our family we have a die-hard train lover: my son. When I heard about the train tour of the plantation, I knew it had to go on our list of Must Do's on the island. That was in 2006, and we've been putting Dole on our list ever since.

We forgo the souvenir shop, but it is nice to wander around on your first visit (especially if it starts raining ;) ). The Dole Whips are delicious and there are different flavors to choose from. The stand is easy enough to bypass, for those who know all to well how their children react to sugar.

Our family simply takes the train ride, grabs a bit of fresh pineapple on the way to the gardens (full of beautiful hibiscus flowers - perfect for pictures!), then heads over to the maze. If you have older children, you can compete to see who gets through the maze first. And yes, the maze is stroller friendly.

Word to the Wise: The train ride has piped in music, which may stay in your child's head for quite some time. If you're doing familiarycerz's version of the Circle Island Tour (see my other Oahu reviews), you might find that your 2 year old knows the lyrics to "My Hawai'i".

"Interesting history"

If you are heading to North Shore, try to stop by the Dole Plantation. Not only will you get to see different pineapples from different places, you could take a garden tour. Think - lots of beautiful pictures of flowers. You could opt to take a guided tour or walk through yourself. I definately recommend taking the train. Lots of interesting information from the speaker about the land and the history of the Dole plantation. The kids enjoy that the most. We decided not to do the maze but I hear it's a lot of fun. While there visit the vendors for all of the different type of souvenirs. There was a free pineapple tasting section done every hour. And I definately recommend the Dole Whip. I hear it's the same Dole Whip they offer in Disneyland.

While we enjoyed our visit, I would probably do it again only with visiting family. Otherwise, once you been there once you've seen all there is to see.

"Dole Pineapple Plantation - Do the Maze!"

If you have time to make the trip out to the Dole Pineapple Plantation, it is worth the time. It is about 40 minutes outside of Waikiki in Wahiawa, so you have to drive or take the public bus to get there.

At the plantation you can take a narrated train ride through pineapple fields, learn about all the different types of pineapples, feed the koi at the pond and enjoy a frozen pineapple dessert!

Regardless, you HAVE to make time to find your way through the world's largest maze! Our kids loved racing through the maze to find the stencil boxes and mark their cards. It took us a while, and we got lost a few times, but it was a lot of fun!

"It's just ok"

Yes, you can get very, very fresh and delicious pineapple juice and products here.  And it is mildly interesting to see how it is produced.  But I think they said that the majority of pineapples for Dole aren't even grown in Hawaii.  The do have a fun shrubbery maze, with clues and prizes at the end.  But I have to admit that we all just wished we had spent another couple of hours at the beach.
