The only park in Orange County to offer beach camping. Beside camping, this is a great beach for a game of volleyball or enjoying a BBQ in their picnic areas. Their Doheny aquarium and visitor's center is undergoing renovations, but their Interpretative center still conducts educational programs for exploring the tide pool, learning about birds, insects, animals, water quality and Native Americans who used to live in the area
We have camped here two years in a row and really enjoy it. The sites are small and near the train tracks but we were able to fit a small trailer, two vehicles, a 4-person tent, a shade tent, and a table for the kids just fine. The bathrooms are nice and the showers are great. The sites are very close to the beach. The shoreline can be very rocky but the kids can enjoy playing in the sand.
You can also go over to the day-use area. They have plenty of picnic tables and barbeques, and you can even reserve them. There's a snack shack that rents multi-person bikes and public restrooms.
This beach is close to both Los Angeles and San Diego, good for a weekend campout without having to drive too far.
We have accessed this beach from the south of Dana Point off of PCH. There is a pedestrian crossing over the road and train tracks that takes you straight to the beach. The price of free admission is that you get to carry your beach gear up 2 flights of stairs and then down.
This is a beautiful beach facing west with a view of Dana Point. There are many small rocks and pebbles that line the beach and get tossed in the surf which can provide activities for little kids. Rock tower building, rock skipping in the surf and rock gathering to name a few of the things we have done. Swimming is not the best option because little feet and limbs can get pounded into the above mentioned rocks. All in all a nice beach!
