More than just an art museum. The Denver Art Museum offers Creative Playdates, Classes & Camps, Family Events, and Free Things for Kids to Do.
We took advantage of a free day (first Saturday of each month) a couple weeks ago and could not believe how much there was specifically for kids. There are backpacks to check out, games or crafts in many galleries, and two play areas. My kids even got Denver Art Museum tattoos!! The only think we paid was $2 for the parking meter.
Our family always enjoys going to the Denver Art Museum. It is free on the first Saturday of the month! And on the free days there are usually some great kids activities. For example, there was a volunteer demonstrating a loom last time we were there, and my son must have stayed there weaving for half an hour. Don't forget to visit the bubble popping room, where kids can stomp on "bubbles" projected on the floor and watch them "pop".
We have been here a few times and each time we see different things...not necessarily because things have changed but because we are overwhelmed every time we visit we can't take it all in at once. Fun to see the classics and more contemporary pieces of art and sculpture. The kids can sit and draw their own replicas of each piece of art as a project.
I love going here with my kids.
If you are a Colorado resident admission is free the first Saturday of every month. My kids and I go about 6 times a year and I've yet to get bored. We start at the top, and head down, floor by floor there is something for everyone to see.
Rumor is, none of the walls are 90degrees, that is why there are wooden borders around many of the walls, because on the pre-opening ceremony many of the contributors were hitting their head on the strangely shaped walls.
It is truly a sight to see in Denver! There is ample parking in the nearby garage, great restaurants nearby and on site as well as a ton of fun for the kids. You can even walk across the enclosed pass over to the old museum and see the art inside there. It's a wonderful day trip and there is always something going on in the area.
Families who visit the newly expanded Denver Art Museum can ask for Family Backpacks, filled with activities, games and puzzles to do in several galleries, or Art Tubes, little mini-activities if you don't have time tour the entire museum. Admission for kids under 5 is always free!
