We stayed in Fort Morgan area for our family vacation and took the ferry over to Dauphin Island for a day trip. The ferry was a lot of fun and getting out of the van to watch for dolphins or just enjoy the breeze. Once on the island we spent the afternoon in the Esturarium and visiting Fort Gains which is definitely worth seeing altough it's a bit pricey.
Our trip to Dauphin Island only consisted of one thing: The Beach! We sat on the white sands forever looking for air bubbles. We were catching little sea muscles. I don't really know what they're called, but we were fascinated! There was a convenient bath house close by and a shower to get all the salt and sand off of us.
We have been to Dauphin Island before and after a hurricane. Before was nice. Not many people, so the drive is nice. You have to drive over a really really long bridge so that is a little scary since I HATE bridges. We went to the estuary a few times and that is a great little free thing to go to. There really isn't much to do there, but the sun and sand are wonderful.
This aquarium is not a good attraction. It is very small and not very exciting for the little ones. There are some fun aspects like a kid room and touch tank. Might be more fun for older kids, but the toddlers I went with were bored. Also there are things (shells etc) lying out where little hands could grab them easily.
We love Dauphin Island. Gorgeous sand, lots of fun. Just bring a cooler and your dog and have fun. There are two fishing rodeos each year that offer fun for all. Gorgeous sunsets, not too crowded. It is a true island so driving over the bridges will remind you of driving to the florida keys. Lots of areas to seclude yourself from others. Worth the trip!!
