Father Damien came from Europe to care for the people who were afflicted with Hansen’s
disease (leprosy) and exiled to the isolated Kalaupapa Peninsula on Molokai. He helped
build homes, churches, and hospitals for hundreds of ill people and eventually died of the
disease himself. The museum offers a glimpse into Hawaii’s past and a look into the life of
this selfless person who helped so many. A twenty-minute video tells the history of Kalaupapa
settlement.
