We love the Dallas Zoo! We go each time we are in the Dallas area. The children's zoo is fantastic...it has a small petting zoo, a place to feed fish (there is a window on the side of the fish pool that you can sit and watch that my kids LOVE), ride a pony, play in the water, climb on a giant spider's web, sit in a giant bird's nest, or play on the other playground equipment. The zoo also has a place to feed (and pet!) the giraffes, watch a bird show, ride a camel (!!), and many other interesting exhibits. The African Giants exhibit is really cool...we actually happened upon a predator demo last time we were there, and got to watch the trainers with the cheetahs. It was really cool. My kids love it here, but I recommend lots of sunscreen, bugspray, and water! There is also a carousel that we ride on the way out each time. You can bring your own lunch in, too, which cuts your cost! The membership is definitely worth checking in to if you have a large family...all your kids are covered in the family membership, no matter how many you have!
I have been to the Dallas Zoo numerous times in the past 20 years. It is a nice zoo. It's no Fort Worth Zoo...but if you don't have time to travel to Fort Worth it's definitely worth going to see. It has a nice little children's zoo area where the kids can get up close and personal with some of the animals. The Wilds of Africa has a great monorail system that will take you through the Africa area. It's a great way to rest your feet and see the zoo from a different angle.
If you've been to the San Diego Zoo, don't bother going here. It's not even comparable. However, I'd say this zoo is worth visiting if you are 1) in a some sort of a time crunch or 2) want to stay in Dallas and not travel to the Fort Worth Zoo.
I went here in the morning for a few hours and it was quite nice. It's a nice simple zoo with everything you would expect from a zoo. There were flamingos by the restaurant which was nice entertainment while eating. They also had tapirs which was pretty exciting.
I don't think I'll be back but it was pleasant.
We have been to the Dallas Zoo several times and each time our kids love it. The zoo is clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. My son loves the elephants and tigers. If you want a fun, educational, affordable place to go then this is what you should do.
We are a family who loves zoos and this was one of the best we've been too! The staff was great and the animal exihibits were all clean and up to date. The food, like any zoo, was expensive for the quality so bringing a picnic is always a healthier option. Remember to bring the camera to capture all of the great family memories!
The Dallas zoo was not my favorite before. But since they have redone the Safari area this Zoo is my favorite zoo that we have been to. My kids love zoo's so we end up finding a zoo in many cities that we visit. The Dallas Zoo made the Safari area so kid friendly and attractive for everyone. Decorated in an african theme throughout the walkways and everything. Dallas can get so hot so they also thought of giving you plenty of shaded areas with places for kids and adults to rest by fans. The area with the animals is laid out in a way that you can see them so clearly. Many of the animlas have a glass wall that you can get right up to so you feel like you are right next to the animals. I do think they could do better with how many bathrooms are available. Also bring swimsuits for kids because in the childrens area there is a little "river" that the kids can play in. The price in food I would say is the worst of any zoo I have been to. So bring your lunch along. But otherwise a perfect zoo.
This zoo has a lot of stuff for kids, a big play area and places to learn and do activities. The zoo itself is not as big as the Fort Worth Zoo, but the extra stuff for young kids makes it nice zoo to visit. We had a lot of fun when we went and I am sure we will go back again someday.
I have always loved this zoo. My children are 3 and 6 years old, and they, of course love it as well. There are wonderful pavilion areas where you can bring your own lunch. You may also dine in the cafeteria, or purchase from the path-side vendors.
One thing I can say is that this zoo is so big! It would take way more than one day to see everything in it. Can't wait to go back!
We love the Dallas Zoo. Our favorite part is the nature exchange. You can take something from nature, pinecones, shells, leaves, and get points. With your points you can buy something out of their nature "store". My son loves it! We also love the tram that gives you a tour around the park. Of course we can't leave without ridin the carosel.
We took our 2 and 4 year old over Labor Day Weekend while we were in town for a wedding with some friends and their 2 kids (same ages). Our friends live in the area and had heard great things about the new zoo.
We all had a blast... kids and adults. The new Giants of the Savanna area is well worth the trip. They've got elephants, giraffes, impalas, and some pretty sweet cats like cheetahs and lions that you can watch through the gigantic glass wall of the air conditioned food court. Like the other reviewer said, it's really cool and the kids were just blissful.
If your little ones were ever into "Goodnight Gorilla", they'll love it because all the animals in the book are at the Dallas Zoo, including a silverback gorilla.
All the kids loved checking out the other parts of the zoo including the fantastic kids areas like the petting zoo, interactive exhibits, and small waterplay area great for the hot Dallas weather.
The Dallas Zoo recently added an 11-acre Giants of the Savanna area and our kids loved it (4 kids: 6-12) especially the younger ones. We've never been to the old zoo, but this one was quite nice. It's a smaller zoo, but given the $12 admission, it's quite affordable and easy to get through versus San Diego which is a whooping $37 a pop per adult.
We went over the summer and it truly felt like we were on an African safari. ;) Luckily, there are a few nice areas with A/C near the viewing areas.
Must- DO: Our kids loved lunch at the Serengeti Grill. We got a table by the windows which are smack next to the lions and there were two lionesses lazing around, squished up against the window. Literally, less than a foot away except for that 6-inch thick window pane.
Skip the monorail ($3/person). Didn't think it was worth it (especially for a family of 6). Nice for kids 5 and under who are really into modes of transportation.
We tend to go to Dallas Zoo during the quite weekday hours when there are less likely to be swamped with older kids and large groups. We have the membership but I dont think it has paid for itself-- zoo is a nice place for the kids to visit, but not something they want on a regular bases.
Our family loves going to the Dallas Zoo when we're in the area! They have lots of animals and fun exhibits for kids. Look for the great petting zoo barn and kids area as well. Admission price is reasonable, but food prices inside can be a little steep.
The dallas zoo is so fun. The animals are fun to look at especially the monkeys. The kids always have fun at the zoo they talk to the animals to see if they'll understand.
The zoo is always a fun and amuzing place to go for kids. It is fun I enjoy going myself because I love animals.
Your family can see thousands of animals, including the world’s largest rattlesnake collection, at the Dallas Zoo. Among the highlights are the twenty-five-acre Wilds of Africa exhibit and a monorail that will take you on a bird’s-eye tour. The facility also has picnic areas and a miniature train.
The Dallas Zoo is much smaller than we thought it might be for a city this size. However, what is there is done well. The monorail is good if you have kids old enough to stay there through it. The children's area has a play area that is a nice break from the exhibits. Of course, since it's in Dallas, the summer is HOT, so maybe that's why it is so small...you're not likely to want to spend more than a couple of hours out in the summer heat!
