I was amazed at the art that was displayed. Wow! This museum is one of the finest that I have been too. It is very elegant and there are so many varieties of things to see. This is in the heart of downtown Dallas so you have so many other things close by. Worth the trip. Be careful with small children. My son wanted to touch everything. Look for discount days online to save money. You can also ride the DART to save on parking.
We went here on a Tuesday morning for the Arturo and Me class. I was totally blown away by both the class and the facilities to help engage kids of all ages with their imagination and expressing it through art.
The Arturo and Me classes are on the first Tuesdays of the month from 11am-2pm for kids ages 3-6. The women who lead the program are good and put together a great class. Our class was on dancing and we got to check out all the artwork related to dancing (ie Degas). Throughout the class, they had the kids draw, play games, create their own dancer (my guy made a breakdancer) and of course do some dancing too.
After the class, we walked around the 12,000 square foot Center for Creative Connections which is incredible. It's got all sorts of activities and materials that for a child of any age to take their ideas and make it into something real. This area is free with museum admission while the class was extra. There's also a room for kids 0-2 to play and explore in with age appropriate toys and play areas.
For older kids, the DMA has Family Audio Tours for free use at the front desk – 3 tours available geared for kids 5-11. They also have late nights on the third Friday of the month from 6pm-midnight. Geared for kids 2 and up, you'll find yoga to bedtime stories here.
Bottomline: The DMA does a great job of making a potentially boring trip to the art museum a truly fun and memorable event for any kid.
Voted one of the best Art Museums for children by Child magazine. The Dallas Museum of Art features an extensive collection of pre-Columbian art along with American and European masters and traveling exhibits. Check the website for hands-on activities storytimes, and workshops for kids of all ages.
