My 20-month-old daughter loves to explore the garden at the Cummer. It is a beautiful and interesting garden, with plenty of little nooks and hideaways to interest my girl. I love taking photos of her in the gardens, and will dress her up especially to take photos. She also enjoys the kids area. We love the virtual paintbrush, and funky shadow lights room. She also likes to do the crayon rubbings, and glass drawings.
The Cummer Museum is a great museum to take your children to. It is very educational and has absolutely beautiful gardens. The Cummer is also available to host different events (parties, weddings etc). It is a great place that you could meet a playgroup at and take different kids all around the place. They also have deals to make it not as expensive to take your children (free after 4 on certain days). This is really a beautiful activity to share with your child and it's small enough that you don't have to worry about your kids getting lost in the shuffle.
This is one of my favorite places in Jacksonville. They have a great collection of art, from pre-Colombian artifacts to contemporary art. The Gardens are a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the quiet view of the river and the beautiful oaks. The children's area is great, with lots of activities for the kids. Visit on Tuesdays after 4 and admission is free. Can't beat that! The parking situation leaves something to be desired, but overall it is a great place to visit.
My family and I love the museum. On most Tuesdays from 4pm to 9pm it is free. The childrens area is small enough to keep on eye on your children and still big enough for them to explore with out getting bored. They now have a small coffee and snack store that is great. The children also love exploring the gated gardens with a wonderful veiw of the river and downtown Jacksonville. We come here at least once a month.
The Cummer museum has a separate childs play area that is interesting and fun, but can be done in 30 mins or less. The gardens are beautiful, relaxing with sweet, touching historic charm. The collection at Cummer Museum has grown from 60 pieces upon opening in 1961 to now include approximately 8000 years of art history. The formal gardens encompass two acres and include English-style and Italian gardens. Tours are available.
If you think art museums are too highbrow for small fry, try this one. In Art Connections they will enjoy getting involved in art by mingling with characters in a re-created masterpiece, painting by computer, or touching replicated elements from pieces in the collection. Besides its excellent hands-on section, Cummer has an impressive traditional gallery and beautiful riverside gardens where children can run.
