If your family wants a unique vacation experience, consider renting an RV. My family has rented RVs from Cruise America several times taking them to the mountains and the coast. Traveling in an RV isn’t for every family, so I wanted to share the good, bad and ugly to this type of vacation.
First the good: 1) Unpack only once 2) Love the leg room while driving 3) Those large windows make the views while driving great 4) That small bed over the cab really is quite comfortable 5) Lodging with a view – fall asleep with the sound of the ocean, or wake up and see the sun rise in Yellowstone. 6) Ghost stories – this is the way to camp, a place to get away from bad weather and a place to wash up. 7) Cheap meals – cook in the RV or find a great campsite for roasting hotdogs.
Now the bad: 1) It is a tiny space, if you are not a close family before, you will be after 2) Cruise America offers standard units – not the luxurious RVs that stars travel in. 3) Gas prices! 4) These things are large and a bit hard to drive, but no special license is required (thankfully my hubby is a pro).
And the ugly: 1) Dump stations – yes it is a disgusting job so remember to bring the rubber gloves and disinfectant wipes.
If your family is the “RV rental type”, I would recommend Cruise America. They have several locations throughout the nation and close to plenty of popular tourist attractions. My family actually had a breakdown in Yellowstone in one of their units, Cruise America service responded promptly and professionally. We were back on the road in no time and offered a mileage discount due to our trip interruption. Cruise America’s prices are very competitive with other RV rental companies and they offer special discounts throughout the season. Consider renting during the off season for a really good deal.
