Located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Crown Center is often called a city within a city. Three levels of great shopping and dining complement two of the city’s most luxurious hotels, exquisite office buildings, a residential community and several entertainment attractions. It all surrounds the worldwide headquarters of Hallmark Cards, Inc.
My husband is in school within walking distance to the crown center, so we occasionally visit him there for lunch. There are some great places to eat there. The boys really enjoy a diner-type resturant called Fritz's where trains bring you your food to your booth and they pass out conductor hats for the kids to wear and take home as a keepsake. The Crown center does a beautiful job decorating for Christmas, but other than food and shopping there is not much for the kids.
This shopping center has a lot of interesting stores in it. This is not your run of the mill mall. There is a crayola store that shows how crayolas are made and had different little activities through the store. This shopping center also plays host to different traveling exhibits that are always free! There is a very neat toy store that carries more educational toys. My kids really liked looking around!
Outside the crown center there is a huge fountain area that we came upon by accident. We were trying to find something for our kids to do and this was a perfect way for them to run off some energy and cool off. Inside the crown center there was also a crayon store which was kind of neat to check out as well.
The nice things about Crown Center is that you can enjoy shopping indoors when the weather is crummy. There are a lot of unique shops as well as larger department stores. The decor is nice and there are often different activities going on for families. Check the schedule on their website before going.
The Crown Center is a beautiful mall. It's not for serious shopping, but otherwise Crown Center has it all. It's very family oriented and has stores for every member of the family. They have a lot of kid themes throughout the year and a favorite store amongst kids is the Crayola Store!
Crown Center Shopping Area is not a great mall for serious clothes shopping. There's only one department store (Halls) and just a handful of clothing boutiques. But it is a great mall for hanging out with the family. There are stores and restaurants there you can't find anywhere else in the area. The Crayola store for example is something my kids love. And the mall always has special exhibits, often for the kids. (They recently had a Clifford the Dog exhibit). A fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
I love crown center! They have great places to shop. Great places to dine. In winter, they have the Ice Skating Rink. In the summer, JiggleJam. They do alot of exhibits that are super-kid-friendly, like the Wizard of Oz, and What do you want to be? Great place where kids can explore and see new things. Lots of eclectic shops as well as Hallmark. A few years ago, they had a list of magic shows that were every weekend for a month with different magicians.
Crown Center, frankly, has it all. They have family events several times during the year. They have a kids section set up where kids get hands on in a place to run, jump, explore, read, and/or listen to stories. They change this section a few times a year to keep it fresh and it is amazing. I am always surprised at what they cook up and how long the kids want to stay and play and explore.
Our favorite restaurant is Fritz's. You place your order on a phone and your food is delivered via toy electric train. My son never kids tired of it. There are several other food choices ranging from food court to more upscale places.
Our favorite store is the Crayola store (they also have a cafe across the hall). They also have a great train store.
Crown Center has a movie theatre and is home to two live theatre companies: Coterie Theatre and American Heartland Theatre. The Coterie is our favorite and puts on great kids plays for a reasonable price.
Besides all this, Kaleidoscope is just across the street (near the fountains) or skyway. This is a great free hands on art event for kids of all ages. Union Station and Science City is also across the street.
During the summer there is a fountain kids are welcome to play in and during the winter it becomes a skating rink.
If you are local you can easily turn this into an all day event (there is a fee for parking, but validation will get some hours free and if you spend over a certain much in a shop/cafe you get more time for free). If you're coming from out of town this is a great location. Two hotels are attached/connected to Crown Center. Its a great jumping off point.
We visit Crown Center 3-4 times a year for different family friendly activities going on. Throughout the year they have a ton of plays, exhibits, festivals, etc. geared towards kids and families. Our favorite restaurant in Crown Center is Fritz's, a railroad themed restaurant where trains bring your food after you order over the phone!
This is a really neat part of Kansas City. Just going from the shopping centers to the fabulous restaurants. It's all kid friendly. We generally try to go to this specific part of Kansas City during our trips up there for other activities. Would definately reccomend.
Crown Center has it everything you want in a family friendly experience. From the shopping and dining to the theatres (both movie and play) to the ice skating rink in the winter and the fountain in the summer for cooling off. There are several hotels that link to the shopping center and for a fabulous Italian dinner, Lidia's restaurant is 2 minutes away and has the best homemade pasta in the midwest.
